While it would be easy to judge Miami St. Brendan for the first-round loss to four-time defending state champion Miami Central, the real story of this program is what they have accomplished in a short period of time.
Remember, the Sabres have only played football for five years now and in the that time, have produced some quality talent.
When Steve Smith took over two years ago, he was faced with a total rebuild, and with a 7-4 season this past year, he is starting to get things back on track when this program had up to five major college prospects who moved on.
Faced with turning things around, Coach Smith, who has built programs and developed players for decades, never complained once and he had e every reason to – having to play freshmen and sophomores before they were ready and it has begun to pay off.
As we are now in the off-season and college coaches will be following the continued development of these prospects, here is a look at some of the talent to keep an eye on:
RISING SENIOR CLASS HAS TALENT.
The nucleus of this program as we are now at the start of the new year is to use some of rising senior class (2024) for leadership and experience. Here is a look at those gifted prospects to watch:

While south Florida is known as one of the most talented regions in the nation for producing high school football talent, it can also work against the area as well.
Because there are so many prospects, finding a home for all of them is never easy – and that is sometimes a problem.
To compound the situation, the transfer portal and NIL (Name, Image & Likeness) have also cut into players getting that exposure needed to at least get some kind of financial assistance to get a college education an play at the next level.
While playing a full a season used to be enough to get the exposure needed, something extra is always something that truly aids in the process. Enter the annual post season Private vs. Public All-Star Game.
For over a decade, Mario Smith and his TRU Foundation have stepped up to give south Florida student/athletes that one additional exposure.
On Saturday night, nearly 100 prospects gathered at Betty T. Ferguson Park for another edition of the game, and by the end, the Private team stood tall with a 22-8 win.
With the teams playing in front of media, colleges and scouting services, this well played event showcased some impressive talent – with Miami Gardens TRU Prep running back Clay Thevenin stepping up with a huge game and taking home the Offensive MVP and Belle Glade Glades Central linebacker Casey Felton Jr., coming up big all game and taking home the Defensive MVP award.
Several south Florida football players enjoyed the week of practice and made their final high school game very special.
“This is an annual game that really helps many of these players get that one final chance to have some more film to send to players,” Smith explained. “In the past, this game was a forum for many prospects to live their dream and play at the next level while getting a college education.”
A game like this is a perfect opportunity for smaller colleges to fill their rosters for the upcoming years. Because of their limited budget it is never easy to get to every game and see every player, but this all-star game opens some new avenues.
In addition to Thevenin and Felton Jr., here are some of the other players who took part on Saturday:

LITTLE HAITI – After five months of the 2022 high school football season, crowning nine champions, the off-season has arrived.
On Friday night – with cool weather surrounding the field at Little Haiti Soccer Park, one of the newest programs – Raw 7-on-7 – held its inaugural showcase with media, recruiting websites and former area players on hand.
As team coordinator and general manager Jose Duasso and his staff welcomed athletes locally and nationally, the 2023 7-on-7 season was greeted by some quality talent.
As this program will be well coached – led by Sedrick Irvin, Tommy Shuler, Keion Payne, Tony Gaiter, Tobias Moss and Miami -Dade County passing legend Rakeem Cato, this is a team that will have a chance to stand toe-to-toe with anyone as their schedule will take them across the country to compete against the best.
“We are really excited about this team and what lies ahead in the coming months,” said Duasso, who was a big part of the Immortals the past few years. “The talent we had here at this showcase was indeed as good as you get.”
CLASS OF 2024 IMPRESSES
They came from as far away as California, New York, South Carolina and Maryland as close as Miami-Dade and Broward Counties to show what they can do on the football field.
There were nationally rated standouts such as Mazeo “MJ” Bennett (WR, Greenville, South Carolina), Korey “K.J.” Duff (WR, Melville St. Anthony’s, New York), Jaydan Hardy (S, Lewisville, Texas), Ellis Robinson (DB, Bradenton IMG Academy), Julien Sayin (QB, Carlsbad, California), Michael Van Buren (QB, St. Frances Academy, Maryland) and Brandon Winton Jr. (Athlete, Bradenton IMG Academy) who all are part of the 2024 class.
Locals also turned heads like Guy Edmond Jr. (CB, Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons), Jamari Howard (Athlete, Westland Hialeah), Jose Leon (WR, Miami Christopher Columbus), Lawayne McCoy (WR/DB, Miami Central) and under-the-radar receiver Marcel Williams from Pompano Beach Blanche Ely.
The 2024 class also showcased:
Tyrese Avant, WR, Miami Central
Irish Bewton, DB, Homestead Somerset Silver Palms
Breon Brown, Athlete, Hollywood South Broward
Demetrius Kitchens, CB, Miami Edison
Kimothy Massie Jr., WR, Westland Hialeah
Andres Miyares Jr., QB, Miami Belen Jesuit
CLASS OF 2025 HAS PLENTY OF GIFTED ATHLETES
As much attention as the 2024 class received at the showcase, the rising juniors in the Class of 2025 also stole some of the spotlight with receiver Dariel Harper (Miami Christopher Columbus), Anjuan Coleman (WR, Miami Central), Elijah D’oleo (WR, Pompano Beach Blanche Ely), Ben Hanks (DB, Miami Booker T. Washington), Koby Howard (WR, Pensacola Catholic), Cortez Mills (WR, Homestead), Naeshaun Montgomery, WR/S (West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman), Max Redmon (DB, West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman), Martin Rhyne (LB, Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas) and recent transfer Antonio “A.J.” Smith (QB, Miami Central).

So did Class of 2027 receiver Malique Denson (St. Bartholomew Catholic), the son of Miami Central great Courtney Denson, also came out and did quite well.

When it comes to the linebacker position, Miami-Dade and Broward Counties continue to grab the spotlight. But it wasn’t always that way.
Sure the two counties have had more than their share of playmakers who have gone on to the next level and beyond, but the position has never been what it is today – with a number of prospects being among the best in the nation.
As we will continue to do during the off-season is promote and spotlight the hundreds and hundreds of players we have watched at camps, combines, practices and games.
We are always striving to have the most accurate information possible when it comes to our database that college coaches are looking at, so this will be what they have to go on as they prepare to recruit the upcoming classes.
Thanks so much for your help in getting the information correct.
