With two local post season senior all-star games, numerous camps and combines, spring and summer football, and a regular season, the Class of 2024 still has a number of talented football players who are out there waiting for an opportunity.

With the coveted Orange Bowl Showcase coming up in less than two months – where college coaches, high school coaches, student/athletes and their parents meet for two days, the beat goes on for these seniors who have put in a lifetime of work – in and out of the classroom for an opportunity to get an education and playing football.

After last Saturday’s annual Public vs. Private All-Star Game at Betty T. Ferguson Park in Miami Gardens, nearly 80 seniors had the chance to showcase what they had – once again.

For many of these young men, this has been a dream and a sacrifice since they were in grade school, and while the landscape of recruiting has changes, and continues to evolve, there is still the belief that there is a school for everyone.

Today, following up on the all-star game, we have five prospects that we continue to get out and provide additional exposure.

Amir Collings, QB, 6-3, 190, Pembroke Pines Flanagan. With so many quarterbacks getting their share of the spotlight in south Florida, many felt that this impressive young man was overlooked. Any college that has a chance to further develop him will be fortunate. He ended up throwing for 1,300 yards and 17 touchdowns for the Falcons.

Djovany Dominique, WR/Slot, 5-10, 185, Coconut Creek. Back as far as the win over Western early in the season, you could tell that this was going to be a big part of the Cougars’ offensive attack this season. No matter if he lined up wide or in the slot, this was indeed someone you always had to account for. In the Public vs. Private contest, he came up with a touchdown reception. Also get it done in the classroom, posting a 2.7 GPA.

Karl Joseph, RB/OLB, 5-10, 185, North Miami Beach. When you play for veteran head coach Jeff Bertani and the Chargers, you will have the opportunity to play just about anywhere on the field. As a running back, linebacker and special teams, he helped to guide this program into the state playoffs.

Malik Thezan, DE/TE, 6-3, 210, Miramar. No matter if it was on the offensive side of the ball – playing tight end and blocking for the Patriots – or on defense, where he was a force coming off the edge for the vaunted “Darkside Defense”, this was a player who showed that he could be that player to get it done at the next level. His work in the classroom (3.0 GPA) will also open some doors.

Demetrius Williams, RB/FB, 5-9, 235, Homestead South Dade. Wherever this team played this season, the opposition knew exactly who this impressive young man. Known affectionately as “Meatball” for his build and the way he rolls through defenses, this is a very talented student/athlete. If you doubt what he can do at the next level, you would be fooling yourself. There are a lot of running backs in south Florida, and while he may not receive the attention most get, you can guarantee that he is as productive as any of them. Just wait until a college lands him, this is a player you will hear plenty from in the future!

MIAMI GARDENS – At a time when high school football coaches, athletes and parents are scrambling to grab the attention of colleges and universities to get some financial assistance to play football and get an education, Mario Smith and Tru Sports Foundation once again were doing their part in the process.

On Saturday evening at the Betty T. Ferguson Sports Complex – right down the street from Hard Rock Stadium – dreams were being realized in front of college coaches, media and recruiting services.

The 14th annual Public vs. Private Senior All-Star Game was held as Smith and his hard-working staff assembled players and coaches from Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Gainesville, Moore Haven, Pahokee, Connecticut, and Canada to get some last film and showcase their many skills.

The game has become something positive over the past 14 years as a last opportunity to turn heads and get the recognition they deserve for dedicating themselves to the sport and getting a high school degree.

As the Private squad prevailed, 24-6, under the direction of former Avant Garde head coach Tally “The Football Guru” Adams and his staff, the objective on this evening was for the players to get exposure, and those who took part, did just that.

For all the coaches who sent their players, it was a chance for them to put the final touches on a tremendous career. For those schools in south Florida who missed out on this chance to help their players, maybe you will let the seniors know in plenty of time.

Instead of ignoring another opportunity, high school coaches should embrace what Smith and his foundation continue to do. It was truly not a good look that schools and players from so many public and private schools chose to ignore this opportunity, and that is what stings the most.

Instead of focusing on what MVP’s Travis Delancy (Hialeah) and Daniel Audit (TRU Academy) did to help their team win the game, it's sad that we are paying more attention to the fact that so many missed the opportunity.

THE SERIES TIED

With the win, the Private team, sprinkled with some Public players on the roster, tied the series at 7-7.

Delancy and FIU signee proved to be quite a one, two combination as they hooked up for a pair of long touchdown passes.

Delancy lofted a beautiful deep ball to a streaking Nelson for a 50-yard score early in the second quarter to stake the Private squad to a 10-0 lead and followed that up with another perfectly thrown deep pass to Nelson for a 48-yard touchdown just 1:24 before halftime to make it 17-0 at the break.

Delancy, who finished the game with 225 passing yards on 12-of-18 passing and three touchdowns, playing for the Private team, was indeed impressive.

“It was a great feeling to just come out here tonight in my last high school football game and just have some fun,” Delancy told the Miami Herald. “A real blessing to be out here and just thank God for giving me the strength, ability and skill to come out here and do what I do best.”

With his Private team up 17-6, Delancy tossed his third touchdown pass of the game to Coconut Creek’s Djauny Dominic on the final play of the third quarter to complete the scoring. Delancy and Nelson were both part of the same Miramar team two years ago, and played on the same 7-on-7 team, so they had a lot of chemistry coming in.

OH, CANADA

While Delancy was getting it done on offense, TRU Prep defensive end Daniel Audit recorded sacks and another tackle-for-loss.

While Audit takes classes at the school, he is actually from Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada. One of the many high school football players from the “Great White North” who compete in the Sunshine – with many attending Clearwater Academy International.

Audit is the son of former Pembroke Pines Charter, Central Michigan and Canadian Football League standout Kito Poblah, a Canadian-born player who continues to work in the Winnipeg community in public relations.

“I love blitzing and tonight was the first time I ever played these different positions on defense (defensive end and cornerback) so it was a lot of fun,” Audit pointed out to the Miami Herald. “They just threw me in there wherever I had to be, and I just tried to make some plays. That’s the way it usually happens in these all-star games, playing a few positions you don’t normally play.”

THE TALENT WAS CERTAINLY THERE

In addition to Delancy and Audit, there were some quality football players who took advantage of the opportunity – such as Homestead South Dade running back Demetrius “Meatball” Williams, who scored from five yards out to make it 17-6 following a blocked extra point with 3:21 left in the third. Williams provided head coach David Simmons and the Public team with most of its offensive finishing with 82 yards rushing.

Every year at this time, there are a number of seniors who are not set on their collegiate future.

With the first National Signing Day in the rearview mirror, and some student/athletes getting ready to leave for college next week, there are still so many without a place to go next year and into the future.

With the coaching convention coming up next week, there will be some avenues for high school and college coaches to get together, showing film and transcripts. There will also be a few small college recruiting fairs and the Orange Bowl event that brings so many schools to come south to see athletes and watch film. But the reality of recruiting today is the uncertainty of college recruiting.

Because of the transfer portal and NIL deals being worked on, there is now a logjam – where prospects used to fit in – and are now forced to take offers that are now putting a financial strain on families.

While there are still programs that work with athletes and their families to lower tuition prices and other expenses, the door is closing faster than in the past.

For years, we have reached out seniors to see if we can assist in the recruiting process. This year we have already put out over 100 prospects statewide – with colleges and universities starting to respond, but not the volume as in the past.

Today, we will bring you five more Class of 2024 prospects who are still looking for a place to get an education and continue playing football.

These Miami-Dade and Broward County athletes represent a small number of the hundreds and hundreds who are still out there.

Kristian Bailey, WR/P, 5-11, 165, Hollywood Hills. When you are looking for a college prospect these competitive days, you want someone who is versatile, makes plays and gets it done in the classroom. As the Spartans continued to grow and build for the future, here was a player who gave the team leadership and production.

Clayton Cannon II, WR/CB, 5-9, 170, Coconut Creek Monarch. While it’s inevitable that this oversight won’t last, the very thought that one of the most productive slot/defensive backs in south Florida would even be out there right now without something concrete. Talk about athletic and football bloodlines, this is a difference maker – and as soon as some comes up with a package to get him on their campus, there will be a number of colleges that completely whiffed here.

Dylan Celeide, LB, 5-11, 200, Miami Lakes Barbara Goleman. For the past two years all this quality student/athlete has done is work hard and do what he needed to grab the spotlight. A true playmaker on the field and carried a 3.2 weighted GPA/ 4.1 unweighted GPA 1030 SAT.

Ammon Dampeer, DT, 6-1, 280, Hialeah American. Another of those under-the-radar prospects who made a lasting impression for a team that made the playoffs. A playmaker that will fit several college defenses. His 3.7 GPA work in the classroom also will open some doors as well.

Justynn Fundora, QB, 5-6, 145, Miami Braddock. While his size may not bowl you over his production and ability to play the game helped to put this quality team into the GMAC Independent title game. He has also made himself more of an attraction with a 4.4 GPA and graduating out of the Cambridge Magnet Program.

 Hello Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, The Keys, Collier, Lee, Martin, Indian River, Highlands, Hendry and all of the areas that make up south, southwest and the treasure coast.

The football exposure event that you have been waiting for is coming to your area – and for those who are looking to jump on the radar screen and put it out there for colleges and universities throughout the country to see.

For the past three years, Prep Redzone has been providing a forum for young football prospects across the country.

With stops in Naples and at IMG Academy in Bradenton, the logistics for the east coast and southern areas of Florida has not provided an opportunity for these future college football players to showcase their skills. That will change on Sunday, January 21, 2024.

Holiday Park, in the heart of Fort Lauderdale, will be the place to be for three hours of instruction and major exposure.

The Prep Redzone Stock Up Showcase is a great opportunity for high school football prospects to get exposure in front of college coaches, Prep Redzone scouts, and other media outlets. Testing results will be recorded for colleges across the country to access following the event. It is open to athletes from 2018-2024!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE EVENT

After check-in, athletes will have a professional headshot taken for identification and will have their height/weight recorded. From there, the showcase is broken into three portions: testing, position-specific drills, and 1-on-1 competition. Testing will include the 40-yard dash (hand-timed), pro shuttle (hand-timed), L Drill (hand-timed), and broad jump.
