With spring football under way and college coaches headed south to check up on the Class of 2024 rising seniors and the Class of 2025 juniors, they will be surprised to find that Miami-Dade and Broward County are stacked with Class of 2026 rising sophomores.
No matter what position you check out in this class, you will find some impressive talent that is ready to make an impact in 2023 – if they haven’t already.
Talking to college coaches this past week, they are anxious to see some the young talent in this region. They know they can plant seeds for the future like they do every year, and while the rising juniors and seniors dominate the football landscape, all know to follow some of these young men who impacted their respective teams as freshmen.
Today, with those college coaches roaming fields in both counties – as well as the entire state – much of the focus will be on those prospects. We checked out some defensive backs who should continue to jump on the radar.
While it’s tough to pick out every secondary standout in the class, we will bring you some to keep an eye on. Remember, college coaches check out our daily information, so if there is a prospect that needs to be added or an athlete has changed schools, please let us know.
There are some prospects who are starting to jump into the spotlight – like Gavin Almonard (Pompano Beach Blanche Ely), Darryl Bell III (Hialeah Barbara Goleman - Athlete), Luc Carroll (Miami Gulliver Prep - Athlete), Santonio Chatman (Miami Booker T. Washington), Samuel Coleman (Miami Southridge - Athlete), Christian Davis (Pompano Beach Blanche Ely), Kaleb Declaire (South Plantation), Raymond Diaz (Miami Coral Park - Athlete) and Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas standout Justice Fitzpatrick, who had an interceptions in the state championship game against Homestead last season.

If you have followed us long enough, you already know that very few promote EVERY and Broward Counties – at ALL levels.
With that in mind, colleges coaches from Hawaii to Maine and every in between keep an eye on what we produce.
We have never been in this to sell subscriptions or spotlight star-rated athletes. This is ALL about getting prospect information out to colleges and universities at every level.
With that said – and you know what we do and why we are here 365 days a year going to events, practices, camps, combines, and games and NOT sitting behind a computer – we will spend this off-season getting everyone promoted.
For over a half century, we have been honored to help football prospects across the state of Florida get some well-deserved recognition.
We not only put these prospects on this website for all fans to see and follow, but all the information that is provided to us is passed on to the over 500 college coaches that are part of our recruiting coverage. Today’s EYE ON RECRUITING will be on MIRAMAR (@CoachAJScott) with veteran head coach A.J. Scott, whose Patriots finished 10-2 last season - with wins over Plantation, Pembroke Pines Flanagan, Coral Springs Coral Glades, Pembroke Pines Charter, Hialeah American, Davie Western, Miramar Everglades and Hollywood South Broward in the regular season, and Pine Charter and Miami Southridge in the state playoffs before losing to eventual 3M state runner up Homestead.

The one thing that you can depend on every year is the same group of football teams will compete for the big prize.
While the rest of Florida has some impressive teams and players, Miami-Dade and Broward County more than represents prospects and programs at all levels.
When we last left the 2022 season, Miami Central and Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas finished the year unbeaten – and the Rockets brought home their fourth straight state title with a bonus of sharing a national crown.
As spring began, some things certainly never change, and while we will see a few new schools start to make their way into the spotlight, we give you a look at how things stack up in the spring.
Remember, this is only a starting point, and while there will be few changes, the Top 20 programs will change several times over 18 weeks from August to the last week of December.
Save your responses for the regular season – when your favorite team will have a chance to prove us around.
Here is a look at the Spring Top 20.
1. Miami Central (2M, 14-0). 2M state champs and a share of a national title. Loaded again and ready to take home the national crown again!
2. Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (3M, 14-0). 3M state champs. The beat goes on for the Raiders. Winning is their business and they doi it well.
3. Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna (1M, 13-1). 1M state champions. Dominating Lions once again.
4. Miami Christopher Columbus (4M, 14-1). 4M state champions. Ready to get back to the state title game.
5. Plantation American Heritage (2M, 13-2). 2M state runner up. Several key positions to fill.
6. Miami Norland (2M, 9-3). Added plenty of firepower in the off-season.
7. Homestead (3M, 11-3). 3M state runner up. New coach but same impressive talent!
8. Davie Western (4M, 7-4). Ready to make a serious run at a state title.
9. Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons (2M, 10-2). Still loaded up with talent – with holes to fill.
10. Pompano Beach Blanche Ely (3M, 10-1). Best season in over two decades.
11. Miramar (3M, 10-2). NEXT GAME: Had a tremendous season and returns plenty of talent in 2023.
12. Miami Booker T. Washington (2M, 9-3). Ice Harris and Max Edwards have plenty of athletes to work with.
13. Miami Northwestern (2M, 6-5). Plenty of new faces plus a new head coach and many holes to fill.

Earlier this week, in preparation for tonight’s first round of the National Football League Draft, there was a graphic that was posted, and it certainly told the story of how potent south Florida is when it comes to producing talent that finds it way to professional football.
What that graphic showed was in the last decade, Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (17), Plantation American Heritage (10), Miami Central (7) and Miami Northwestern (7) sent 41 players into the NFL. That doesn’t include some of the other schools that have produced one, two, three, four, five and six.
When the bell sounds this evening, signaling the three-day event from Kansas City, Fort Lauderdale University School and Northwestern are predicted to add to that total.
Daniel Luque remembers it like it was yesterday. A three-star prospect coming out of University School, Zay Flowers was used him everywhere, and he shined.
Receiver, defensive back, special teams performer, he did it all, and while colleges were interested, it was Boston College that offered this 5-11, 170-pound speedster an opportunity to do his thing right away.
As a freshman in 2019, Flowers established himself as a player to keep an eye on, playing in all 13 games with two starts, rushing for 195 yards, and catching 22 passes for 341 yards and three touchdowns.
In the coming years, he started to do the very thing that Luque and his high school coaches predicted. His ability to do so much on the football field, set him apart, and for those colleges who didn’t look in his direction, they learned fast.
Flowers has been talked about as a first-round selection tonight. Not transferring this past year showed NFL teams a lot. For a 3-9 team, he caught 78 balls for 1,077 yards and 12 touchdowns.
With teams such as the Texans, Ravens, Bills, Vikings, Giants and Chiefs being mentioned, this south Florida talent will add his name to a growing list of Miami-Dade and Broward standouts to make an impact at the next level.
PITT KNEW ALL ABOUT CANCEY
When nationally recognized recruiter Charlie Partridge was adamant about Northwestern’s Calijah Kancey, he was indeed in the minority.
Partridge and the University of Pittsburgh were sold on the under 6-foot defensive lineman, drawing comparison to a decent Panther, Aaron Donald, who was also someone who didn’t have the “measurements” for the NFL.
While many schools – including Miami were not sold on his height – Partridge and Pitt felt that over time this way under-the-radar talent would be special.
For those who didn’t believe in what he brought to the table, it was 2021 when things began to fall into place as he started all 14 games at defensive tackle, earned first team All-ACC honors and third team Associated Press All-American. Coming up with 13 tackles for loss and seven sacks, he firmly placed himself in an elite group.
From that year, it was evident that dozens of college recruiters and coaches had blown their evaluation, never taking into consideration that he was dominant in one of the most talent-rich areas in the country.
This evening, with many pre-draft predictions in place, this impressive defensive lineman has been linked to every team from New Orleans to the Jets, Eagles, Tampa Bay and several other teams in search of a playmaker who had talent and ran the fastest combine ever for a defensive tackle!
SOUTH FLORIDIANS ARE DRAFT ELIGIBLE
As much of the attention will focus on Kancey and Flowers, there are others from Miami-Dade and Broward Counties who are eligible for this draft.
There are several prospects who will have their opportunity via the draft or free agency.

Less than three weeks after Vernon Wilder III returned to coach his alma mater, Miami Carol City, the Coral Park Rams turned to an energetic and knowledgeable football coach and teacher.
Growing up in Palm Beach County and attending Glades Day in Belle Glade, Remington Young brings plenty of experience to Miami-Dade County to get Coral Park back on track.
While Wilder started to get the ball rolling, the Rams believe that Young is someone who has a passion for the game and will put 12 months a year into helping to put this program back on the landscape in the competitive world of south Florida football. He is ready to compete in 7-on-7 events as well as sending his players to camps and combines – starting this summer.
With 13 years of coaching experience, Young has been around programs that were in a rebuilding mode, so he is eager to get started as spring is under way.
“I’ve had an opportunity to develop and teach while setting the table for the future,” Young explained. “From Wellington to Jupiter Christian and Oxbridge Academy, I helped to change cultures at schools that have not been in the mix for a while.
Young is an offensive oriented coach, so is now starting to build a coaching staff and give the Rams an opportunity to learn and compete. This will be his first head coach opportunity.
Over the past two years, the Rams have finished 10-9 after an 0-3 Covid season. Since 2004, they have finished 27-79.
