Bizarre Week Ends With Ely Remaining Unbeaten

Going into last Saturday night’s regular season finale, most gave Pompano Beach Blanche Ely little chance of beating longtime rival Fort Lauderdale Dillard in the annual Soul Bowl matchup.

Playing the Panthers even for the entire first season, the game was stopped because the crowd on hand got out of hand and the Tigers were awarded the victory.

The 9-7 game-shortened win gave head coach Mike Bailey and his team a “perfect 9-0” record, heading into this week’s playoffs. A huge shot in the arm for a team that went 9-46 since the 2015-16 season.

While many dispute the win – others will take it and move on!

The Tigers head into the playoffs on a roll:

BOYD ANDERSON, W 32-0

CYPRESS BAY, W 42-7

Coral Springs, W 42-0

Coconut Creek, W 28-21

FORT LAUDERDALE, W 28-16

Deerfield Beach, W 7-0

WEST BOCA RATON, W 47-12

Dillard, W 9-7

THIS WEEK’S TOP 5 MIAMI-DADE/BROWARD GAMES

Here we are in the final weekend of the 2022 regular season, and while many seniors will be playing for the final time ever – there are others who will not only move on to the playoffs, but college as well.

This has indeed been a season to remember for so many teams in south Florida and yesterday, today and tomorrow, there will be some pretty good matchups to check out.

Here are five more games to keep an eye on:

No. 18 Hollywood Avant Garde Academy (6-2) at Miami Gardens Monsignor Pace (4-5), 7:30. While it has been a tough year for the Spartans, playing in a competitive 2M district, the Sharks have truly made a huge statement, picking up where this team left off last year when they were a No. 1 seed and unbeaten in the regular season. With just two setbacks, this team gets ready for the post season, but still has to go against Chaminade-Madonna once again to advance.

Hollywood South Broward (5-3) at No. 7 Miramar (7-1), 7. Outside the usual suspects, who continue to win at an amazing level, the Patriots have been as impressive as any team, winning a district and setting themselves up for a run in the post season. The Bulldogs have really fallen off – with key losses that have them limping down the homestretch. This is an essential game for them to get the momentum back.

Miami High (4-5) at No. 20 Miami Jackson (6-3), Curtis, 7:30. The Generals continue to roll and make a major statement with quality play on both sides of the ball. They continue to showcase a team that is slowly making their way back into the mix. Miami High started the week off with a tough loss to South Miami, but can certainly change the way this season ends as they prepare for the 2023 campaign with a number of younger prospects.

No. 11 Plantation (7-2) at No. 16 Davie Western (5-3), 7. One of the most competitive south Florida matchups for the final week of the regular season. Both headed to post season play, this promises to be a contest that features to explosive offenses and gifted defensive units. Both teams are well coached and are completely opposite in what they bring to the table. Both lost to Miramar and beat Coconut Creek, which are common opponents.

No. 8 Pompano Beach Blanche Ely (8-0) at No. 9 Fort Lauderdale Dillard (6-3). This Saturday night may the biggest “Soul Bowl” these teams have played in many years. Last year, the Panthers cruised. As the Tigers have remained unbeaten, Dillard has lost to the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the state – something that simply has never happened before. Throw out the records, this party is about to get real – as both teams look to use this non-district contest as a tune up for the post season.

Some Will Use Final Week As A Playoff Tune Up

With the state playoffs a week away, we hit the final Thursday, Friday and Saturday of the regular season with mixed emotions for many Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.

With many of the top tier programs using Week 11 as a time to rest up for the state playoffs – others will give their seniors one final opportunity to attract college scholarship attention.

No matter what the format and classification change had brought this season, winning cured all, and for many programs who head into the first round of the playoffs, this was a season that served many purposes.

Ask any coach, player or fan and all will agree that this season went way too fast. The build up that happened for over nine months seemed to flash by right before our eyes.

When play starts to today, it will signal three days of regular season football that will create memories for some and will bring the end to their career that started in youth leagues and will come to an end as seniors in high school.

5 Miami-Dade/Broward 2024 Prospects For A Wednesday

Each and every Wednesday throughout the course of a year, we bring you prospects from Miami-Dade and Broward Counties that deserve the spotlight.

While many are already on the radar for college coaches and fans, there are others that we introduce for the first time from watching live and seeing what they bring to the table from a different perspective.

With many recruiting services and promotional websites getting these standout prospects out from watching film, we have always believed in attending as many practices, combines, camps, 7-on-7 events and games as possible – giving the colleges and those fans who watch high school football a fair assessment on the student/athletes who compete.

While promoting these young men year-round has always been an objective, the colleges and universities have long trusted in the evaluations that we bring them – aside from what we write in these brief paragraphs about football talent in these two counties.

While this particular blog is devoted to Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, our year-round coverage of the entire state of Florida gives us a huge advantage when comparing talent, and while many throw around “the best” when talking about certain standouts, we have more than a valid way of determining how well-rounded these football players are when comparing them to each other.

Today, we have five more football players that we have been fortunate to watch from as close as five feet away:

2024 – Jordan Lyle, RB, 6-0, 190, Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas. Every year it seems like the Raiders have a running back that sets the bar higher and higher, and this impressive junior has already established himself as one of the best this storied program has produced. Drawing attention from major colleges nationally, what he brings to the table is something that very few have been able to do. In addition to his running style, he has the size, versatility, and talent to make it to the next level and beyond. Will be one of the best in the country next year as a senior.

TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/15321847/Jordan-Lyle
2023 – Winstanson Mathurin, OL, 6-5, 270, Coconut Creek Monarch.
Coming from Coral Springs, here is one of the hidden gems in south Florida. Big, quick, strong and talented are things that college coaches have started to watch – especially during a season when the Knights have done so well. Watch him play and you see someone who dominates and is just scratching the surface. His ability to play either guard or tackle is something that has drawn plenty of attention. Add in the fact that his work in the classroom (4.2 GPA) continues to open doors and you have something very special in this student/athlete!

TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/14754023/Wistanson-Mathurin

2024 – Jonathan Morillo, QB, 6-1, 172, Pembroke Pines West Broward. With all the quarterbacks in south Florida getting so much pre-season hype and attention, here is one who received very little of the spotlight but is a gifted young man who has turned out to be one of the best in the entire state in his junior year. He has been among the top 10 overall passers for the Bobcats as this program continues to grow and build along with amazing sophomore receiver Joshua Moore, who we spotlighted before anyone else had the opportunity to watch him early in the season. Morillo will blow up during the off-season and you can count on that.

TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/15293036/Jonathan-Morillo

2023 – Julius Pascal, RB/FS, 5-11, 175, Miami Dr. Krop. There are so many versatile two-way prospects in south Florida this year, but very few who can do what this young man has done. A three-year starter for the Lightning, he is regarded as one of the top running backs, where he went over 1,000 yards and scored 12 times, as well as a defensive back who can play three positions and create positives with four interceptions – one for a game-changing touchdown. Solid talent that college coaches continue to watch.

TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/15268168/Julius-Pascal

2024 – Amare Sanders, CB/WR, Miami Gulliver Prep. Like Gabe Taylor, who is currently at Rice University and was a one year football standout for the Raiders, here is a gifted prospect who made a name for himself on the basketball court before showcasing his many skills. While following in the footsteps of his older brother, Tony Sanders (6-7) who is a basketball standout at Notre Dame University, many who follow this game feel that his future on the football field is already being carved out. After watching him twice this season, this is someone who has a chance to blow up in the off-season and head into his final year next season as one of the elite prospects. Remember his name because he is truly a gifted athlete in many arenas.
