Since 2013 Lakeland High’s football team has gone 97-11. In that time, the Dreadnaughts beat some quality programs.
Last December they wrapped up a first ever 4S state title beating Venice in legendary head coach Bill Castle’s final game.
As they approach the 2023 season with a new coach and several new faces, replacing the top-rated defense in the state, this is a program that has not lost sight of what this team has long been about.
With all that said, when they welcome in Miami Norland this evening to open the season, are the Dreadnaughts maybe biting off more than they can chew? Seven years ago, Miami Carol City traveled to Polk County for the first of a two-year contract.
The first meeting watching Carol City race out to a 35-0 lead and came away with a 38-7 victory. The very next year, the Chiefs won convincingly, 44-34.
When this game was scheduled, and with the knowledge that Norland had one of its most talented rosters in recent memories, those two games quickly came to mind.
The Vikings made over 20 roster additions in the off-season, and they have built a team that is more than capable of playing with anyone in the state. Remember, they are in the same district as national power Miami Central!
Are the Vikings ready to take that next step – or will the beat continue as the Dreadnaughts dominate competition?

Twenty-eight years ago, Loren Johnson finished up his senior season at Miramar High before heading off to Virginia Tech to play football and get an education.
On Friday night at 7:30, Johnson makes his return to the high school and city where it all began – as the Patriots will play host to Johnson’s Highland Springs, Virginia powerhouse in the Broward County National Football Showcase – Presented by the Broward Educational Foundation.
The Springers are easily one of the most successful programs in Virginia, and Miramar head coach A.J. Scott and his team fully understand the assignment. Scott actually played against Johnson when he attended Hollywood McArthur, so now they get the chance to coach against each other.

After nearly nine months since the last official high school game was played in the state of Florida – with Miami Christopher Columbus taking home the 4M title – we go back to work starting today.
With a nearly full slate of games, including the Broward County Football Showcase, players, coaches, cheerleaders, and fans will flock to games throughout south Florida.
One of the games that many will want to watch is Miami High and first year head coach Dorrean James traveling to Ives Park for a matchup with Dr. Krop.
The Stingarees, who finished 4-7 last year, are trying to turn things around with some new faces up and down the lineup.
With a win against Miami Ferguson in the kickoff classic last week, there is plenty of enthusiasm surrounding this team.
For Dr. Krop veteran head coach Tom Caporale, going 5-1 down the stretch last season and going two rounds deep in the state playoffs have fueled this program in the off season.
With several quality prospects coming back, this year could be a season where the team continues to turn the corner.
