In the ever-changing world of high school football in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, there is a new No. 1 team, heading into the third week of the season.

Whether it was in Las Vegas, where top-rated Miami Central took powerhouse Bishop Gorman down to the wire before losing – or at home where Miami Northwestern’s Michaelee Harris picked up, Week 2 certainly did not disappoint.
Before the season started, we told you that this year will be filled with some amazing matchups in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, and the second week backed it up.
Miami Central was looking to make a statement in the race to defend their national title, was derailed by a team that came into the contest 2-0 and had scored 132 points so far this season.
While the Rockets fell short on the road, they showed exactly why winning a fifth consecutive state title is indeed a major reality.
When the Northwestern Bulls beat rival Miami Jackson in the “Soul Bowl” on Saturday night, it was the first win of the young season for a team looking to turn it all around.
In addition to those contests, there were also some games that more than pegged the meter:
Miami Palmetto 26, St. Petersburg Lakewood 12. The Panthers moved to 2-0 with a road win as they set the table for a competitive next few week.
Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas 49, Fort Myers 0. After watching their almost two-year win streak come to an end in the opener, the Raiders got back to doing what they do best – dominate!
Gainesville, Georgia 30, Coconut Creek 22. While many just passed over this game, here is a word of warning: keep an eye on the Cougars. They went head-to-head on the road with a Georgia powerhouse and now return with plenty of confidence.
Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna 41, Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons 4. After a loss by Miami Central, the Lions are now the No. 1 team in south Florida and right behind national power IMG Academy in the state. They came out and never took their foot off the gas against a team that knows how to win the big ones.
Miami Southridge 27, Miami Dr. Krop 22. This was really one of the Games of the Week as the Spartans and Lightning put on a show down south, it came down to making a couple of key plays. You will hear from both schools this season.
Plantation 56, Stranahan 28. We said it before and you will hear it often, keep your eye on head coach Steve Davis and his Colonels. They are high scoring and have plenty of talent.
Plantation American Heritage 28, Jacksonville Trinity Christian 6. If there were any questions about how good the 2M state runner up Patriots will be this season, just check the first two games where they dominated and showed why they are going to be tough to stop from getting back to the title game.
Here is a look at some of the other south Florida results from Week 2:

For three hours last December, the state of Florida had to watch undefeated state champion Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna get dominated in the Geico Bowl in Las Vegas.
The Lions, considered by many as the best team in Florida in 2022, and one of the top 5-10 in the nation, were beaten soundly by a Bishop Gorman team, who happened to be missing six starters off a state championship squad.
After that game, the focus quickly turned to 2023, and while it was a given that Mater Dei and St. John Bosco out of California would be among the elite nationally, Bradenton IMG and Bishop Gorman were thrust into that conversation as well.
At just about the same time that the Gaels were dominating the Lions in the desert, Miami Central was putting the final touches on a 14-0 season and fourth straight state title – beating Plantation American Heritage and sending them into the off-season feeling like they were among the best – if not the best in the country.
As they shared a mythical national crown with St. John Bosco, there was talk of a third meeting between the Rockets and Bishop Gorman.
The two schools do have a history – with Miami Central winning in Las Vegas in 2017, 20-14, and the Gaels winning in 2021 in Naples on a missed kick, 21-20.
Tonight (10 p.m.) the national showdown will take place between the two schools as Bishop Gorman will play its home opener after two road games to start the season.
The Rockets will begin the 2023 season after beating Ocala Vanguard on the road in a kickoff classic two weeks ago.
While the offense is a work in progress – with three new quarterbacks – the Rockets do have the personnel on defense. Will it be enough to slow down a team that scored 123 points in the first two games of the season? We will certainly find out for second year head coach Jube Joseph and his impressive team.

There was a time when a mention of Miami-Dade County’s “Soul Bowl” would stir the pot between fans and players at Miami Jackson and Miami Northwestern High Schools.
Families and friends on both sides of this annual matchup would fill the air with verbal battles and plenty of bragging in the few miles between Liberty City and Allapattah.
The epic athletes, teams, coaches and battles that took place between two programs that had always been at the center of the football power competition in the county.
But as the two teams get together this evening for a 7:00 kickoff, the one-time marquee matchup has been reduced to a Thursday night sideshow at Traz Powell Stadium.
With both teams away from that elite spotlight as the 2023 season heads toward the second week, the game will struggle to attract that fan support and attention.
Over the past three decades, it has shifted from a rivalry to a one-sided game – with the Bulls dominating the Generals.
In the past 10 meetings, the Bulls are 9-1 and have outscored the Generals, 361-103 with two consecutive shutouts. To put into a bigger perspective, Northwestern is 16-1 in the past 17 meetings.

As we wrap up the 2023 Broward County National Football Showcase we take a look at the seven local teams who took part.
With a 5-2 record against teams from Georgia, California, Virginia, Washington D.C. and North Carolina, Broward County more than held its own against some quality opponents.
While there was plenty of talent on all the fields and in every game, we chose seven players to shine a spotlight on:
2024 – Allen Bryant, S, 6-1, 170, Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas. With an already strong defensive secondary, the Raiders have someone who has a chance to be very special this season – and last Saturday against California power St. John Bosco. He is one of many south Florida prospects who have committed to attend Pittsburgh.

2024 – Zachary Crothers, DE, 6-4, 240, Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna. Yet another University of Pittsburgh commitment who is going to be a catalyst for the Lions on the defensive line. Made an impact against Baltimore power St. Frances Academy last Saturday afternoon. One of the top pass rushers returning this season.

2025 – Deandre Desinor, RB, 5-9, 170. Plantation American Heritage. From the day he transferred from North Broward Prep, those who know the game fully understood that this was going to be one of the major impact players in south Florida this year. A dominant junior running back, who brings everything to the table and already has eight offers.

2024 – Guy Edmond, DB, 5-11, 180, Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons. This is one of those impressive football players that the coaches and his teammates have been talking about for the past two years. Is one of the most complete defensive backs in south Florida – and he brought his “A” game to the opener against North Carolina’s Cardinal Gibbons. By the way, he had six college offers and counting.

2025 – Koby Howard, WR, 5-11, 180, Davie Western. When he arrived this summer from Pensacola Catholic this may have been the most talented football prospect of the 275 who came into programs across Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. Already considered one of the elite football players in the Class of 2025, colleges from all over the country are following his every move.

2024 – Shamar Meilke, DE, 6-5, 215, Miramar. While this program always produces elite talent and football players who make a splash at the next level, they have yet another one who made an impact on several schools before committing to attend Indiana University. Has a chance to be very special.

2025 – Samari Reed, WR, 6-2, 190, Coconut Creek Monarch. For those who have been watching this gifted football talent perform the past two years have said that this is easily one of the fastest-rising receivers in the state. No matter who he goes up against at any level, he more than holds his own.
