Recruiting News

Wednesday, October 7th South Florida High School Sports Radio Show

It’s another week of football as the popular and nationally recognized South Florida High School Sports radio show with Larry Blustein on 104.3 FM WQAM moved to Wednesday night this week - brought to you courtesy of University of Miami Health Sports Medicine.

Each week, the program attracts the newsmakers in high school sports, recruiting college sports – not only locally, but throughout the country.

The show gives listeners an opportunity to hear about college football programs statewide from the media that cover them. It also focuses on the coaches who use the state of Florida – Miami-Dade and Broward Counties in particular.

The program, which has been run for nearly two decades and has been rated as one of the top programs of its kind has become a popular listen for recruiting fans as well as high school sports purists, focusing on high sports and the newsmakers.

Here is a look at the way Wednesday night went:

Imagine leading your team in sacks. Imagine leading the state in that category. How about the nation! Miami Killian senior defensive end Dashaun Collins will head into Week No. 8 with 19 quarterback sacks, which is good enough to be the best in the country! He spoke about how he improved from his junior season.

For the past three and a half seasons, Christian Cassidy has learned, matured and has become a leader as an offensive lineman at Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons. As a team captain, he has been instrumental in paving the way for a solid running game – while providing protection for the quarterback. While he may not play football in college, he does have his career plans in order.

With the University of Miami having this week off to rest after a physical five-game stretch, all eyes will be on Hard Rock Stadium a week from Saturday night for the annual showdown with rival Florida State University. Jazz Santana from The Sixth Ring Canes Podcast looked at this football program and how depth has paved the way so far.

With St. Thomas Aquinas holding on to the No. 1 spot nationally, all the Raiders have to do is continue to win and take home a national title. But as Zack Poff from Max Preps told our audience, there are some quality programs across the country who could be in the same position. Several south Florida teams are among the best in the country.

While everyone is paying attention to the inaugural “Open Division”, Andre Fernandez is looking at what some of the other Miami-Dade and Broward programs will be able to do away from that classification. Several teams are looking to find their way to Pitbull Stadium in the second week of December to play for a state title in 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A as well.

Speaking of the Open Division, there are several teams who are currently not mentioned as one of the eight best in the state – and while there is a long way to go – the formula for choosing this inaugural field is not very popular with the human element losing out to a computer ranking. Jon Santucci from USA Today has some valid ideas on how this should all work.
