Recruiting News

Who Will Be King of The Sacks In Miami-Dade/Broward?

When the 2022 high school football season ended, south Florida was well represented when it came to players with the most quarterback sacks.

With Fort Lauderdale’s Jalyn Jackson leading the state with 32.5, the attention certainly fell on Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.

University of Miami signee Rueben Bain (29) of Miami Central, FSU signee Lamont Green Jr., from Miami Gulliver Prep (20) and Keyshawn Johnson (17) from 3M state champion Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas set standards locally with big numbers.

As those players have moved on to the next level, there are several newcomers and returnees from last year who will be after that crown as the 2023 season unfolds.

Here are some candidates who return with domination in mind:

Germain Carter Jr., DT, 6-1, 285, Miami Norland. With an off-season move from Miami Carol City, this FIU commitment is bigger, stronger, and quicker than the standout who had 19 sacks, 76 tackles and 25 tackles for loss in 2022. Easily one of the most dominant defensive linemen in Florida, his production will once again be game-changing. He brings so much to the table as a player and teammate.

Zach Crothers, DL/DE, 6-4, 235, Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna. After an amazing junior season, this heavily recruited prospect is looking to improve on his 15 sacks from last season when the Lions once again captured a state title – the first 1M crown. This is an elite football talent who combines speed and athleticism. He also gets it done in the classroom as well – holding down a 3.7 grade point average.

Kenley Israel, DE/OLB, 6-2, 215, Miramar Everglades. It’s been a few years since the Gators have had a player who ranks among the best in the state of Florida. Here is a versatile talent who combines skill with an ability to make plays. He is the kind of player that if he doesn’t make the play, he will certainly set his teammates up to make it. That is the kind of player he is. Finishing with 20 sacks a year ago, this could be a banner season as college coaches will continue to monitor his progress.

TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/video/3/15296070/6341b2e9a6770717d432ddca

Gavench Marcelin, DE, 6-3, 240, Miami Belen Jesuit. This soon-to-be four-year starter for the Wolverines has been the heart and soul of this team coming off another stellar year that put him in a spotlight for colleges and universities to keep an eye on. When he committed to attend Florida Atlantic University, the Owls received a game-changer who would come in and in time, make those around him much better. Coming off an 18-sack season, he is primed once again to lead this team emotionally and physically. A true talent that is respected on and off the playing field.

TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/14592831/Gavench-Marcelin

Brandon Rosenthal, DE/OLB, 6-1, 210, Miami Gulliver Prep. One of the most versatile football players in south Florida. Someone who can play four to five positions and does well at all of them. Coming off an impressive 2022 season where he had 12 quarterback sacks, this was one of the Raiders’ top tacklers this past season. On a team that is working hard to get back into the playoff mix this coming season, they will need his playmaking abilities and leadership to get it done. Easily one of most underrated prospects we have in this region. Watch him play and you will see why he is such a huge asset to head coach Earl Sims and this team. Also gets it done in the classroom – where his 3.91 grade point average will open plenty of doors.

5 Emerging Miami-Dade, Broward Prospects

As you know by now if you wanted to shine a spotlight on every football player in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties who are flying beneath the radar, you would be doing it for a long time.

For as many prospects who get their recognition, there are hundreds and hundreds more that could easily be in that group – and the amount of talent that gets to the next level and beyond certainly backs that up.

Our objective has always been to include every player no matter what size, speed or classification. That is a belief we have lived by for decades and decades.

If you follow what we do, you already know that it doesn’t matter where you play, we will find you and shine that spotlight directly on you.

Today, we bring you five more football prospects to keep an eye in in 2023:

2024 - Ivory Atkins, WR, 5-8, 150, Miami Norland. In an area that boasts some impressive pass catchers, here is one who will most definitely be a huge asset in the Vikings’ race for a start title. His speed and ability to get open have made this impressive talent someone who will be heard from plenty this coming season. College coaches looking for a playmaker need to keep this young man in mind.

TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/16195783/Ivory-Aikens

2024 - Semaj Jackson, S, 5-10, 175, Plantation American Heritage. Makes the move for his final season to play for a team that made it to the state finals a year, and with his addition, there is no getting around the fact that the Patriots are getting a prospect who will give everything and work overtime and year-round to make sure that he gets the most out of his ability. With tremendous coaching and top-flight support, this is certainly a football player to have on your side.

TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/15116651/Semaj-Jackson

2026 - Tavarus Jones, CB, 5-9, 175, Miami Immaculata LaSalle. For someone so young, he showed this past year how fast he has grown and matured. One of the top football prospects in his class, and while the team lost some players, he found a way to make it happen. His off-season has also been important as more eyes were fixed on him, and coaches are talking about his future and looking forward to what is ahead for the 2023 season.

TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/17807070/Tavarus-Jones

2024 - William Roberts, OL, 6-2, 275, Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas. On a team that always has its share of elite talent, here is one of those players who has flown beneath the radar screen. Watch him play and you will see someone who plays at a different level. From whistle to whistle, he is a big man that will help fuel this national powerhouse as the continue an impressive winning streak and a long list of state titles. Just watch him and you will understand why this is a prospect that you will want to keep an on this coming season. Hard work has indeed paid off.

TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/15319918/William-Roberts

2026 - Humberto Serrano, 5-11, 170, QB, Somerset Academy Silver Palms. If you happened to watch this team during the spring, you saw this gifted young man who embarked on his high school career as an 8th grader. His ability to throw and run gives the Stallions a prospect for the future. One who is willing to put in the time and take his craft to the next level. Tremendous athleticism and work ethic which will add up to something very positive for a team that is ready to jump back in the mix with so many positives going on in their team.

Competition Is The Name of The Game In Off Season 7-on-7

You get the feeling that no matter what Miami-Dade and Broward County football prospects take part in, they will compete hard and want to win.

While all over the country, they continue to proclaim how great their football is – and there are some area teams that have elite talent – the one thing that separates south Florida from anywhere in the country is their attitude.

While summer 7-on-7 is fun for about every high school team in American, the 954 and 305 go beyond that, and it starts with how these young men were raised.

Because they are thrown into competition from the first time they put on pads and a helmet, it’s all about winning, developing and being competitive.

Athletes who are friends, talk and text with each other every day become mortal enemies when they compete against one another.

SOCIAL MEDIA FUELS THE FIRE

Because south Florida has long been a hotbed of talent, alumni remain a huge part of the culture for these programs, and with the success of teams such as Chaminade-Madonna, Miami Central, St. Thomas Aquinas, Miami Northwestern, Plantation American Heritage, Miami Christopher Columbus, Cardinal Gibbons and so many others, bragging has been paramount – no matter where you go.

Fuel is added to the fire – and it all starts in the off-season with talk about matchups coming up. That makes 7-on-7 events very interesting.

Look at Facebook, Instagram or Twitter after weekend tournaments and championship photos are splashed for everyone to see and boast about.

TUTU ATWELL EVENT BRINGS OUT THE HEAVY HITTERS

Last weekend – for the second straight year, the Tutu Atwell Foundation hosted a 7-on-7 tournament at Charles Hadley Park, and over two days, elite players and teams competed for a $5,000 prize.

In the heart of Liberty City, you had easily more talent competing on the two fields than in any other place in the country – and it wasn’t even close.

Besides Chaminade-Madonna, which won the event, you had national powerhouse Miami Central as well as Northwestern, Miami Norland, last year’s 3M runner up Homestead and Miami Booker T. Washington among others.

The event saw prospects do their thing in front of Atwell and his NFL supporters, former area stars and current coaches.

Players such as nationally rated receivers Jeremiah Smith and Joshisa Trader, Class of 2025 standout receiver Kyle Washington and 2026 difference maker Denairius Gray, who just arrived from Boynton Beach Somerset Canyons.

North Carolina State quarterback commit Cedrick Bailey Jr. was also impressive.

Defending national champion Miami Central was also on hand and they looked very athletic with three quarterbacks and Florida State wide receiver commit LaWayne McCoy, who is easily as good as anyone in the state – and will be huge for the Rockets.

On defense, 2025 safety Sekou Smith Jr. showed why he will be a prospect to keep an eye on.

Coach Tim “Ice” Harris has already gotten the Tornadoes back into the mix – after a nine-win season Miami Booker T. Washington is stacked with seniors, such as Andre Brown Jr., but also underclassmen receivers Gerard Modest, the younger brother of three-star versatile running back Gerald Modest, and speedy Anton Smith.

On defense, this team may have the best young secondary in Florida – with 2025 prospects Antonio Branch and Ben Hanks Jr.

Miami Northwestern flexed some of their muscle with youth, but also with gifted receiver Darius 'Boobie' Johnson, who came over from Miami Edison. 2027 future star Nick Lennear also is going to be amazing.

Homestead showed off their 2025 receiver Cortez Mills along with 2024 Daytona Beach Mainland transfer James Randle.

The one team that has been the talk of the off-season is the Miami Norland, who had 17 transfers and were looking to build around their talented returners.

One of those talents that got some much-needed help is state-rated 2025 quarterback Ennio Yapoor, who has worked harder than anyone to improve his standing.

One of Yapoor’s newcomers is versatile receiver Jade Card, a 2025 prospect who has the chance to be among the best after coming over from South Broward.

The Vikings also have plenty of speed on the outside with 2024 receiver Ivory Aikens.

There were so many gifted football players over the two days and throughout the off-season, and Class of 2026 future stars Jordan Campbell from Hialeah American and versatile Darryl Bell III from Goleman were also impressive this past weekend.
