Miami Booker T. Washington Is Back On The Map

THE TORNADOES FILE

Head Coach: Tim “Ice” Harris

2021 Record: 5-7

THE SCOOP

There are very few high school football programs in the country where you can see change in a matter of months like what happened to this team this spring and summer.

The return of the legend Coach Tim “Ice” Harris Sr. was behind the transformation of a school that has been in its share of the national spotlight through the years.

Big time football talent and solid coaching has always followed this program, and with the return of Harris, who was the head coach at Florida Memorial University, you could feel the electricity this spring as players and coaches alike turned up the volume in Overtown once again.

In what turned out to be a tremendous month of June, the Tornadoes used the spark that this team had during late April and into May as they look to get back in not only the state championship picture, but the national conversation as well.

What this spring and summer has done was give this program a chance to rebuild the roster, and they certainly have added some pieces – while others have matured and grown up. Here is a look at some of those prospects to keep an eye on in 2022:

Coral Gables Relying On Some New Faces In 2022

THE CAVALIERS FILE

Head Coach: Frank Welsh

2021 Record: 1-6

THE SCOOP

Once again, the 2021 season was a season where this program looked to build for the future – and while there were some losses that hurt – this is a proud program that continues to fight the fight.

With a win over Miami Coral Park, several prospects - young and veteran – had the chance to feel exactly what it’s like to be on the plus side of things.

But while the losses stung and humbled many prospects, veteran head coach Frank Welsh truly believes that this team is ready to start turning the corner, and with a few additions and the return of more mature players, he just may be on to something.

With a productive spring in the books and a summer that has watched several prospects attend camps and other events, this is a program that may pull a few surprises in 2022.

While the 2021 season proved to be up and down, there were a few things that sent this team into the off-season feeling positive.

Even though they lost to Somerset Homestead South (14-7), Miami Ransom Everglades (27-24), Somerset Academy Silver Palms (24-0), impressive Miami Florida Christian (14-0) and Miami Palmer Trinity Prep (26-23), there was indeed reason to be very optimistic.

Miami Coral Reef Looks For Consistency In 2022

THE BARRACUDAS FILE

Head Coach: Tim Wood

2021 Record: 4-6

THE SCOOP

If you follow high school football in south Florida, you know that everything is based on consistency.

For this program, losing the final five games of the season certainly dashed any hope of reaching goals that were set at the start of the years.

Wins against Miami Sunset (15-0), Miami Ferguson (10-0) and Doral Regan (14-0), gave this program so much hope – starting the year out with three wins and not yielding a point over the first 12 quarters, but the came the 42-0 setback to Miami Palmetto, followed by a 21-12 win against Southwest Miami.

While the way the 2021 season came crashing down was a bit of a negative, the solid spring this team had was certainly a reason to believe things could turn around this coming season.

Here is a look at some of those prospects expected to make an impact this coming year:

CLASS OF 2023

Alejandro Cisneros (CB, 5-11, 175)

David Conde (OLB, 6-0, 175)

Julian Fernandez (OG, 6-3, 275)

Luca Radu (WR, 5-9, 160)

Walter Simson (DE/FB, 5-11, 210)

Darius Tyler (DT, 6-4, 230)

Steven Williams (MLB/FB, 5-11, 205)

CLASS OF 2024

True North Classical Academy Racing Toward The Playoffs

 THE TITANS FILE

Head Coach: Greg Laffere

2021 Record: 6-3

THE SCOOP

What the 2021 season came down to for this program was consistency.

Winning six of the first seven games certainly turned out to be the combination that put this program in the playoffs. The three straight setbacks to end the year – including a loss to Fort Pierce John Carroll in the opening round – was the reason they didn’t go further.

Instead of dwelling on those losses to John Carroll, Pembroke Pines Somerset Academy, Miami Ransom Everglades and Naples First Baptist Academy, it’s the six wins that this program used during the spring and into the summer for motivation and confidence.

Wins against Miami St. Brendan (34-6), Homestead Everglades Prep (42-0), Miami Palm Glades (37-6), Miami Archbishop Carroll (24-19), Tavernier Coral Shores (28-27) and Hialeah Gardens Mater Academy (29-23) showed this team that it could lineup and perform when they needed to.
