Miami Norland Shows GMAC Supremacy

Lakeland, Miami Booker T. Washington, Miami Central and Miami Christopher Columbus. Four programs that are among the top 25 in the state of Florida. Four schools that have been beaten by Miami Norland.

When the unbeaten (8-0) Vikings beat Christopher Columbus, 16-3, last Friday night at Traz Powell Stadium, they captured the 2023 Greater Miami Athletic Conference (GMAC) title.

With head coach Dave Dunn and the Explorers finishing in second place for the second straight years, the Vikings and veteran head coach Daryle Heidelberg moved one step closer to an unbeaten regular season.

Big plays and solid defense guided Norland throughout the night.

Davie Western 14, Miramar 6. The Wildcats have started to make some noise and they are quickly getting the attention of the 4M program across the state as well as south Florida. Winning the district championship two weeks ago, they took care of business against the Patriots.

Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas 35, Coconut Creek Monarch 19. Coming into the game, the Knights felt they had a chance to stay right with the four-time defending state champions, but the Raiders put their foot on the gas and sent a message that they are ready for a fifth straight title run.

Miami Booker T. Washington 13, Miami Edison 0 - Miami Booker T. Washington 24, Homestead South Dade 7. One of the teams that you better watch for in 2M are the Tornadoes and head coach Tim “Ice” Harris. They have battled everyone involved and figures to play Central in the second round of the state round of the state playoffs. They are getting healthy at the right time.

TOP PROSPECTS THIS WEEK

Every week we try to list talented Miami-Dade and Broward top players from the week.

Since we promote, by far, more players than anyone else, the talented young men that we may not spotlight on Monday, we more than make up for during the course of a week.

Here is a look at some of the local talent that we highlight this week:

Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas 2024 RB Jordan Lyle ran for 230 yards and 5 scores in a win over Coconut Creek Monarch.

2024 Aidan Karsh, QB, Miami Gardens Monsignor Pace was 16 of 24 for 260 yards and 4 touchdowns. Cole Rodriguez, 2027 K/P went 5/5 on extra points.

Hollywood Hills 2025 Athlete Amari Isaac scored 3 touchdowns, accounted for 160 yards and came up with 4 tackles.

2025 RB Elijah DeWoskin, Pembroke Pines West Broward continues to have a solid season as he ran for 125 yards and 2 scores in a win over rival Pembroke Pines Flanagan,

Miramar 2024 DE/Edge Shamar Meilke continued to have a tremendous season for Miramar as he added to his 19.5 sacks in a loss to Davie Western. He is committed to Indiana.

2024 LB Brendan Leal, Davie Western has been steady all year. This 3.65 (GPA) student had 9 tackles in a win last week.

Miami Somerset Silver Palms moved to 4-4 this past week as 2026 QB Humberto Serrano (150 yards passing and 2 TDs), Robert Reddish (1 receiving TD and interception), Jonathan Ramos (2 interceptions, 6 solo tackles and a forced fumble) and Jordan Lyons (7 solo tackles and a forced fumble).

2024 DL Andres Quiroz, Miami Coral Reef (10 tackles and 1 pass deflection).

Once again, Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy had several players step up. Among those were Senior QB Anthony Barbar (20/22 for 356 yards and 5 TDs), Junior WR/DE D.J. Wimbley (8 catches for 155 yards and 2 TDs. He added 2 tackles, 1 TFL and .5 sacks), Senior WR/LB Evan Tempro (5 catches for 72 yards and 2 TDs. He also had 2 tackles and .5 TFL) and Junior LB Mikee Varga (6 tackles, 3.5 TFLs and 1.5 sacks. He added a rush for 18 yards).

Southwest Ranches Archbishop McCarthy continued to turn heads in Week 9. Among some of players that stepped up included QB Robert Kerns (8-13 for 171 and 2 TDs, 2 carries for 58 and a TD), Jeremiah Alexandre (7 carries for 77 yards and TD) and Kobi Williams (3 catches for 88 yards and 2 TDs).

Ten More Thursday Games Highlight GMAC Week

As we head toward the second day of the 2023 Greater Miami Athletic Conference Week, two doubleheaders will take the spotlight.

As there are 10 games that will share the spotlight. Tropical Park and Traz Powell Stadium will be the place to be for over seven hours of football, highlighting GMAC programs as the conference continues to use this week to promote its many schools.

TROPICAL PARK TODAY

Coral Gables (4M, 4-3) vs. Miami Northwestern (2M, 2-6), 3:30. Obviously this has not been the year that the Bulls and first year head coach Michaelee Harris had planned for, but with a good showing and finishing off the season will be something to build on.

For the Cavaliers, a winning season was the objective when the year started. A great showing down the homestretch will also give head coach Frank Welsh and his team something to build on as well in 2024.

Miami Dr. Krop (3M, 4-3) vs. No. 8 Miami Palmetto (4M, 6-1), 7:30. When head coach Tom Caporale and the Lightning dropped the district title game a few weeks back, the objective was to finish off the season and get the seniors some final looks and prepare the juniors for the 2024 season.

The Panthers have bigger fish to fry as head coach Mike Manasco and his team will use this week as a springboard to make a run at a 4M state title. They are improving every week.

TRAZ POWELL STADIUM DOUBLE DIP

North Miami Beach (2M, 2-6) vs. Southwest Miami (3M. 1-7), 3:30. There is no getting around to the fact that these two teams have not achieved what they set out to do at the start of the year. Even with a tough schedule, veteran head coach Jeff Bertani and his Chargers were not satisfied, competing in one of the most talented districts in the state.

For head coach Taj Marshall and the Eagles, the objective is to develop and build a program that continues to make strides in playing competitive football.

No. 17 Miami Southridge (3M, 6-2) vs. No. 4 Miami Central (2M, 3-3),7:30. Nobody has to tell you the frustration the head coach Jube Joseph and the Rockets have felt this season. The four-time defending state champions have lost three times – two to the No. 1 and No. 3 programs in the nation, and a district title to unbeaten Miami Norland by a total of 10 points. This is still a team you must fear, and for good reason.

For head coach Pierre Senatus and his Spartans, things had been moving along until the district title game last week at Homestead – where the wheels fell off.

In addition to those games, here is the full schedule for Week 9 in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties:

American-Miami Springs Kickoff GMAC Week Tonight

With the Greater Miami Athletic Conference wanting to showcase their member schools with a week devoted to teams playing one another, the GMAC Week will get started this evening.

The 7 p.m. start at Milander Stadium in Hialeah will feature the Patriots of Hialeah American (2M, 4-3) against the Golden Hawks of Miami Springs (2M, 6-2).

This evening’s matchup gets four days of action started that will culminate on Saturday night.

The idea of GMAC Week was to showcase some of the state’s best teams in the #305 as they battle against each other in a north vs. south format.

Last year’s title game between Miami Central and Miami Christopher Columbus featured two state champions in an exciting game that came down to the fourth quarter before the Rockets emerged, 35-28.

LOCAL REWIND – WEEK 8: Norland-Central Have Instant Classic

When Miami Central roared out to a 20-0 lead in the first half, NOBODY could have predicted the finish some two hours later,

If they were writing a Hollywood ending to this 2023 season, it was certainly enhanced when the Vikings came back and remained unbeaten with a 29-26 overtime victory against a Rocket team that has dominated the landscape of football in the state of Florida.

While the four-time defending state champions walked out of Traz Powell Stadium on Friday with a rare loss, you can almost guarantee that it only sets up a third-round state playoff game between these two impressive programs.

While head coach Daryle Heidelburg and his 7-0 Vikings could have folded up after the three-score deficit, but like the previous week against Miami Booker T. Washington, they found a way, and that way came via sophomore kicker Noah Sidan, who had problems converting extra points all night, booted the game winner.

Keep in mind, the Rockets have lost three games this season by a total of 10 points to the national No. 1 team Bishop Gorman, the No. 4 rated Chaminade-Madonna Lions and a Norland team that has been impressive. Between the three programs they are 20-0, so DO NOT COUNT OUT head coach Jube Joseph and his football team.

WAIT, THERE IS MORE

In addition to that thrilling game, there were other matchups that produced district championship performances – such as Coconut Creek’s 42-28 win over West Boca Raton, Davie Western wrapping up their district with a 56-0 win against Weston Cypress Bay, Hialeah bringing home a district crown with a 25-7 victory against North Miami, Homestead’s revenge win against Miami Southridge, 45-14.

Miami Booker T. Washington, who can win the district title tonight when they play Edison, moved one step closer, handing Miami Northwestern a 28-20 loss.

In a battle of unbeatens, Fort Lauderdale NSU University School took care of Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy, 42-7.
