Week 7 Miami-Dade/Broward Rewind: What A Week!

We warned you a few weeks back that as the season moves along, the games become more important and to keep an eye on the unexpected.

This past week started on Thursday night as Miami Booker T. Washington and Miami Norland got together for a 2M matchup.

Both teams were indeed up for the game, and with a second half rally, the Vikings took advantage of an injury and opportunistic play to remain unbeaten.

With the district title up for grabs this coming week, Norland will be tested heavily against nationally rated four-time defending state champion Miami Central. The Vikings ended up winning the exciting contest, 20-19.

On Friday evening, the annual Miami Northwestern-Miami Central contest took place, and as usual, the game lived up to what it's all about in a rivalry like this.

The Bulls, who came in with a losing record, never backed down and stayed in the game all the way until the end, losing to the powerhouse Rockets, 17-10.

With their only two losses this season to unbeaten national powers Las Vegas Bishop Gorman and Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna, the Rockets continued their quest for five straight as they used depth and talent to come out on top and now lead 9-6 in the past 15 meetings.

The same night, Plantation American Heritage traveled to play Western in Davie. The young Patriots have exceeded expectations after losing so many players from last year’s 2M state runner up squad – while the Wildcats, a favorite in 4M before the season – have fallen short of what was expected.

Western remained in the game throughout, falling short in the fourth quarter, 28-14.

Both teams are very much alive in the race to get to Tallahassee in December.

Perhaps the biggest shocker of the week was Homestead’s convincing 32-16 win against Miami Christopher Columbus.

In a Saturday night showdown between the 3M state runner up Broncos and the 4M state champion Explorers turned out to be a contest that not only opened some eyes but may have changed the perception in the final month of the season.

It was indeed a week that not only caught the attention locally, but also will change the state poll this coming week.

In addition to those four games, here is a look at how Miami-Dade and Broward schools fared in Week 7:

CENTRAL-NORTHWESTERN: Still A Huge Rivalry

It is a rivalry in every sense of the word.

The mention of Miami Northwestern and Miami Central on the football field gets blood boiling and splits households right in half.

It's 71st Street vs. 9th Street, Bulls vs. Rockets. Coach Jube Joseph vs. Coach Michaelee Harris. One of the most fabled and competitive football matchups in the nation - where records mean absolutely nothing.

Some of the best talent that has ever played the game have elevated their play for this game, and that is why tonight (7:30) – when 3-2 Miami Central takes on 2-4 Miami Northwestern at “The Mecca”, Traz Powell Stadium, a full house is expected for this showdown that has taken place 14 times in the past seasons.

The four-time defending state champion Rockets come in as a huge favorite, but that does not bother Bulls’ fans, who know that the given “point spread” never takes into consideration the magnitude of this contest.

Tonight’s Booker T. Washington-Norland Game Needs No Hype!

When it comes to exciting elite level high school football games, Miami-Dade and Broward Counties have no rival.

It doesn’t matter where you go in this nation, it will be hard to find the weekly matchups that are played, involving teams that are nationally rated.

Keep in mind that in the latest national ranking, seven south Florida teams were rated among the top 25. More than Texas, California, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Louisiana or any other football “hotbed” there happens to be.

No. 9 Miami Booker T. Washington at No. 5 Miami Norland (Traz), 7. Well, the talk is over. Bragging about which team is better will be settled this evening.

Veteran head coach Tim “Ice” Harris and his BTW Tornadoes get another opportunity to knock off another elite south Florida high school football team. Remember, they battled national power and four-time defending state champion Miami Central down to the end before losing 38-28.

This team is stacked with big time prospects and well coached. They split the two meetings last year – with them winning in the regular season and dropping a state playoff contest.

For head coach Darryl Heidelburg and his high-powered team (52 points per game) has a second test of the season.

In the opener, they beat defending 4S state champs Lakeland on the road, and in the process, turned a lot of heads and convinced many – across the state and locally – that they are a team that could indeed break Miami Central’s dominance, but that is next week.

This team needs to put the entire focus on this evening’s matchup. If they win, it sets up an even bigger district title game next week. A loss will only give those fans a reason to believe that this season was all hype. This game has much a stake and will capture the attention of every football fan in Florida.

Edison and Palmetto Kickoff Week 7 Tonight

While the great thing about high school football in Miami-Dade County may not be convenient for everyone, the lack of facilities certainly make it fun for those who love to watch the sport four days a week.

While Thursday and Friday are pretty much the norm for football across the nation, playing Wednesday and Saturday in the #305 has given this who follow and evaluate talent another avenue to see games.

Because nearly all public schools do not have facilities with lights, it has forced the county and the Greater Miami Athletic Conference to play doubleheaders as well as on Wednesday and Saturday.

No. 17 Miami Edison at No. 8 Miami Palmetto (Tropical), 7. This week’s game that is scheduled for today looks to be a good matchups as the teams head down the homestretch – with district games taking center stage.

This non-district contest will feature 4M Palmetto, who lost only to favorite Christopher Columbus, and Miami Edison, which dropped a road game at St. Petersburg against the same Lakewood team that head coach Mike Manasco and his team had little problem with.

While the Red Raiders offer no excuses, the contest was played without head coach Luther Campbell, who has built this team over the past few years into a contender.

Each team has a signature win – with Palmetto knocking off the defending 3M state runner up Homestead Broncos – with Edison beat Miami Northwestern for the first time in over two decades.

While this is not a district game, both teams are certainly ready for the challenge.
