South Florida is home to some of the top high school football talent in the nation.
Each year, prospects come from every part of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties, and impact teams like no other area in the country.
Because there are so many elite football players, prospects who many had not followed in the past, seem to explode on the scene and turn that spotlight in their direction.
Look on college rosters and you will see products of football fields all over south Florida. While many are the ones we have all followed for years, there are those who may have added weight, got stronger or just turned enough heads at the right time to get that much-needed recognition.
PLAYER: Devaughn Mortimer
SCHOOL: Fort Lauderdale Dillard
SCOUTING: When the 2019 season began, there were a list of seniors, juniors and sophomores that recruiting services and colleges had put together for the season.
As many did exactly what those “experts” said they would do, there were those that very few people knew about that burst onto the scene and made a huge splash. One that was heard by everyone.
Here is one of those young men that the late head coach Eddie Frasier talked about during the summer. He spoke about his talents and how his maturity was starting to take hold. He also warned that this was going to be someone who was going to be special.
As the memory of Coach Frasier still stings a bit, his words were indeed prophetic about this speedy route runner that truly made a huge impact this past season.
As college coaches and opponents watched, Devaughn blazed a path that was noticed and appreciated by many.
With the 2020 season on the horizon, here is one of those gifted football players who is expected to have a banner junior season, attracting more college attention and putting himself in a spotlight where he is being recognized nationally.
