Cardinal Gibbons Takes Home Nike Clewiston 7-on-7 Title

After winning the state 4A football title last December, Cardinal Gibbons and head coach Matt Dubuc have been building the Chiefs back to that championship level.

With some key losses from the championship team, the first order of business was to reload those vacancies – and with a solid spring and productive off-season, this is a team that heads into the 2021 season as the overwhelming favorite to win a third title in four years.

With enormous talent on hand, this past Saturday was all about having some fun – with a trip to the Clewiston for a very talented 7-on-7 event.

With several close games and plenty of talent on all fields, the Chiefs held on to beat Miami Gardens’ TRU Prep to take home the title and finish a perfect 6-0 on the day.

Coached by former Hialeah High head coach Gary Sanchez, the Saints also made a huge impression – finishing 6-1, beating all the powers at the event.

In addition to Cardinal Gibbons and Miami Gardens TRU Prep Academy, Clewiston, Glades Day, Pahokee, Riviera Beach Inlet Grove, Lake Wales, Rockledge – and south Florida powers Miramar, Chaminade-Madonna and Deerfield Beach also took part in this star-studded event.

CHIEFS STEP UP WITH PLENTY OF TALENT

The reason why this program is among the best in the state – is the train of talent that pours into this northeast Fort Lauderdale school.

Coach Dubuc and his staff have made the experience of playing at this school one that everyone statewide will continue to watch and appreciate.

Among those on hand for Saturday’s tournament win were gifted senior receivers Elisha Edwards (6-1, 200) and speedy Davon Kiser (5-8, 160).

The junior class is stacked with difference makers who will give this team frontline players along with quality backups.

Keep an eye on Adonis Allen (WR, 6-0, 170), Komani Beneby (WR, 5-10, 170), Jaden Blackburn (CB), Romell Dorcin (LB, 5-10, 200), Tre’Mone Drisdom (CB, 5-9, 170) and outside linebacker Jeremiah Makins (5-8, 170).

Also, defensive secondary standouts Johnel Mauvais (5-11, 175) and Willie Reed (5-9, 170) and gifted quarterback Dylan Rizk (6-1, 185), who was recently offered by UCF.

The sophomore class is perhaps as good as you will find anywhere in this state – with Pat Anderson Jr. (RB, 5-7, 155), Jeremiah Chalmers (WR, 5-11, 160), Carlos Dales Jr. (LB, 6-0, 220), Casey Etienne (S, 6-2, 170), Tyrell Fuller (WR, 5-8, 160) and emerging national tight end recruit Colton Heinrich (6-3, 210).

The Chiefs also feature Antonio Lindsay Jr. (WR), Eric Morris (S), Kimani Thomas (CB, 5-8, 145), fast-emerging quarterback Luke Warnock (5-11, 180) and running back Bryce Webb. Also, keep an eye on freshman receiver Trent Dubuc, who is quick and has a chance to be special.
