There are so many quality athletes in south Florida, competing in more than one sport is something that you find all the time.
Back in the day, there was never a question when someone wanted to play multiple sports. In fact, it was encouraged. But times changed throughout the years – and each sport demanded year-round attention.
Playing two sports, while it’s still a huge plus, can cost you when missing out on events that are required to keep up with the competition.
Football, basketball, baseball, wrestling and track all seem to go hand-in-hand, and often where you see athletes playing two sports.
The days of playing football and basketball are not over, but you are seeing less and less of these two-sport stars at the high school level.
TURNER PROFILE
PLAYER: Dallas Turner
POSITION: DE
SCHOOL: Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas
CLASS: 2021
HEIGHT: 6-4
WEIGHT: 230
SCOUTING: Delon Turner was a huge basketball standout back in the day at Miami Carol City. All-County, highly thought of by college coaches and someone who had the size and athletic ability to play the game.
Fast forward a few decades and Dallas Turner is also a tremendous basketball prospect – with the size and athletic ability to compete against the best.
While he is a force on the hardwood, like dad, this impressive talent also happens to be one of the best football players in the country – and as the numerous college offers will back up – he has made his decision what sport he will play at the next level.
With a mid-season move from Plantation American Heritage, a place he had been since the 4th grade, to play for the defending 7A state champions, working with first year defensive coordinator and NFL Hall of Famer Jason Taylor.
Taylor’s work with Oklahoma standout Nik Bonitto and University of Florida-bound Derek Wingo was a factor in making the move – as he wanted to benefit from what Taylor knows and will teach him over the next year.
Turner has already built up quite a resume, and the opportunity to play with some other gifted prospects, only time will tell how much he elevates his game.
