With everything that has transpired in the past five months, football will finally return to south Florida this evening (7:00) when two state champions will square off in a game that will not be open to fans.
In this Covid-19 landscape, defending 2A state champion Hialeah Champagnat Catholic and head coach Hector Clavijo will travel to Hollywood to take on Dameon Jones and his three-time defending 3A state champions – in a matchup that has to be a marquee event.
While many high school football programs sit and wait for something positive to happen, the game is being played and student athletes are missing out on a valuable opportunity for exposure.
This past weekend, several areas across the state of Florida opened the 2020 high school football season – and this coming weekend – many more, including local defending state champions Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna (3A) and Hialeah Champagnat Catholic.
The one position that has long been overlooked – especially in south Florida are linemen.
Just in the past five years has there been an effort to put offensive and defensive linemen in the spotlight – and much of that was done by former linemen who came back to either coach or run camps.
As many athletes and parents still have Covid-19 and the start of the 2020 high school football season on their minds, it was time to get out of the house and compete safely last Saturday at Carter Park in Fort Lauderdale.
With Torrian Wilson from “Crafting Linemen” and Javon Gopie from the “Sack Sensei” on hand with plenty of other qualified coaches a solid group of linemen came for two sessions – with the Class of 2021 and 2022 taking center stage early, and the future of high school football – the Classes of 2023, 2024 and 2025 coming in for the early afternoon session.
Nobody understands how tough the past four plus months have been more than high school athletes.
This pandemic has altered everything from actually being in the classroom to competing in spring and summer.
