Weather Cuts Into Week 5 Games In south Florida

With games being shifted to today and further along in the season, Week 5 was truly one of those were some good games were shifted around.

In between the lightning and rain, there were some games played that turned out to be very interesting for programs who needed that spotlight.

One of the most anticipated games of the weekend never happened – when 2A power Champagnat Catholic and 3A Chaminade-Madonna – were called off due to Covid. That game featured five state titles between the two schools and 10 consecutive state championship appearances.

Instead, the week showcased some games that many looked forward to – such as the 8A showdown between Miami Palmetto and Christopher Columbus, which came down to a controversial call and a Palmetto win, 7-3.

RAIDERS WIN BATTLE

It was to be a clash between two-time defending 7A state champion St. Thomas Aquinas and 8A Western.

While the Raiders took control early and got out to a large lead, the Wildcats showed plenty of character and pride and lost just, 31-21 with a strong fourth quarter.

SEVERAL TEAMS ARE TURNING HEADS

In addition to the traditional powers, south Florida is also home to a group of teams, away from the spotlight, who continue to make some noise.

Among those programs include Cypress Bay (Weston), which beat Cooper City 42- 12 to stay unbeaten, Doral Academy (5-0), a 37-6 winner over Miami Southridge and impressive Florida Christian, which also moved to 5-0 in the regular season with a 33-14 win over Somerset Pines.

Other teams who are unbeaten in the first five weeks of 2021 are Miami Immaculata LaSalle, a 35-0 winner over St. Brendan, streaking Miami Killian (5-0), which beat Miami Carol City, 40-25 and Somerset Silver Palms, which remained unbeaten with a convincing 24-0 win over Westminster Christian 0.

Despite losing to Miramar a week ago, South Broward (4-1) rebounded with a 29-17 win over West Broward.
