On two different nights, Miami-Dade County had two wins that many felt they would never have against a pair of higher seeds on the road in Broward County.
On Thursday, Belen Jesuit brought their 4-6 record and No. 7 seed to Hollywood to square off with a higher seed and district champion Bulldogs of South Broward in the 3M Region 4 quarterfinals.
The Wolverines, who finished third to Homestead and Miami Southridge played all four quarters as head coach Don Chaney Sr. used a 165-yard performance from Georgia Tech commit Khamani Alexander to bring home with an exciting 20-13 win.
They move on to play Miramar on Friday night in the semifinals.
On Friday night at Flanagan High in Pembroke Pines, first year head coach Chris Reid and his Buccaneers continued the magical season as they beat West Broward, 43-31, in the 4M Region 4 quarterfinals.
Led by seniors Edward Farley-Kendrick and Jerrell Jordan and a stingy defense, they will now move on to play top seed Christopher Columbus with plenty of momentum.
WESTMINSTER EDGED IN FINALE
When Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy headed to Lakeland for last Saturday night’s Sunshine State Athletic Conference state title against Oviedo’s The Master’s Academy, the Lions felt confident.
Rebounding from their only regular season loss, head coach Ehren Wallhoff and his team had the momentum and were feeling good after a convincing win over Fort Lauderdale’s NSU University School.
Falling behind early, Westminster fell short and ended the season 9-2 with a 34-27 loss.
This team didn’t go down without a fight:
Senior QB Anthony Barbar was 21 of 35 for 381 yards and 2 passing touchdowns. He also rushed for 31 yards and a touchdown.
Junior WR D.J. Wimbley had 11 catches for 274 yards and 2 touchdowns with a long reception of 88 yards. He added 8 tackles, 1 TFL and 1 sack for a loss of 8 yards on defense.
Senior LB Evan Tempro had 9 tackles and 1 TFL. Evan also had 5 catches for 60 yards.
Despite terrible weather conditions, Senior K Mason DiBona was 3/3 on PATs and was 2/2 on FGs with kicks of 24 yards and 34 yards.
Congratulations to a great season and giving south Florida something to be proud about!
