When Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons play host to 0-1 Monsignor Pace this evening (7:00), it will be the culmination of months and months of waiting for this moment to unfold.
Head Coach Matt Dubuc and his football team has talked about this season since losing to eventual state champion Miami Booker T. Washington in the 4A playoffs.
The Chiefs, who many had not been talking about when looking at the teams capable of getting to state this year, certainly has something to show those critics in what will be a brief regular season before the playoffs begin.
Loaded with quality prospects, the Chiefs are out to show schools such as Miami Gulliver Prep, St. Petersburg Lakewood and Cocoa that they belong in the conversation to win a state title, which they did just two, short years ago – at the 5A level.
With head coach Mario Perez and his Spartans coming off an opening-night loss last week to defending 2A state champion Champagnat Catholic, tonight’s meeting with the explosive chiefs will be yet another test. They understand that playing mistake free football against a stacked team is a must.
The Spartans have their share of impressive athletes, but enough to beat a powerhouse like Cardinal Gibbons? Time will tell!
