Is There Any ‘Soul’ Left In The Jackson-Northwestern Matchup?

There was a time when a mention of Miami-Dade County’s “Soul Bowl” would stir the pot between fans and players at Miami Jackson and Miami Northwestern High Schools.

Families and friends on both sides of this annual matchup would fill the air with verbal battles and plenty of bragging in the few miles between Liberty City and Allapattah.

The epic athletes, teams, coaches and battles that took place between two programs that had always been at the center of the football power competition in the county.

But as the two teams get together this evening for a 7:00 kickoff, the one-time marquee matchup has been reduced to a Thursday night sideshow at Traz Powell Stadium.

With both teams away from that elite spotlight as the 2023 season heads toward the second week, the game will struggle to attract that fan support and attention.

Over the past three decades, it has shifted from a rivalry to a one-sided game – with the Bulls dominating the Generals.

In the past 10 meetings, the Bulls are 9-1 and have outscored the Generals, 361-103 with two consecutive shutouts. To put into a bigger perspective, Northwestern is 16-1 in the past 17 meetings.

PROSPECT WATCH: Broward County National Football Showcase

As we wrap up the 2023 Broward County National Football Showcase we take a look at the seven local teams who took part.

With a 5-2 record against teams from Georgia, California, Virginia, Washington D.C. and North Carolina, Broward County more than held its own against some quality opponents.

While there was plenty of talent on all the fields and in every game, we chose seven players to shine a spotlight on:

2024 – Allen Bryant, S, 6-1, 170, Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas. With an already strong defensive secondary, the Raiders have someone who has a chance to be very special this season – and last Saturday against California power St. John Bosco. He is one of many south Florida prospects who have committed to attend Pittsburgh.

TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/14966864/Allen-Bryant

2024 – Zachary Crothers, DE, 6-4, 240, Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna. Yet another University of Pittsburgh commitment who is going to be a catalyst for the Lions on the defensive line. Made an impact against Baltimore power St. Frances Academy last Saturday afternoon. One of the top pass rushers returning this season.

TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/15279528/Zach-Crothers

2025 – Deandre Desinor, RB, 5-9, 170. Plantation American Heritage. From the day he transferred from North Broward Prep, those who know the game fully understood that this was going to be one of the major impact players in south Florida this year. A dominant junior running back, who brings everything to the table and already has eight offers.

TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/16029752/Deandre-Desinor

2024 – Guy Edmond, DB, 5-11, 180, Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons. This is one of those impressive football players that the coaches and his teammates have been talking about for the past two years. Is one of the most complete defensive backs in south Florida – and he brought his “A” game to the opener against North Carolina’s Cardinal Gibbons. By the way, he had six college offers and counting.

TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/17392856/Guy-Edmond-Jr

2025 – Koby Howard, WR, 5-11, 180, Davie Western. When he arrived this summer from Pensacola Catholic this may have been the most talented football prospect of the 275 who came into programs across Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. Already considered one of the elite football players in the Class of 2025, colleges from all over the country are following his every move.

TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/16502246/Koby-Howard

2024 – Shamar Meilke, DE, 6-5, 215, Miramar. While this program always produces elite talent and football players who make a splash at the next level, they have yet another one who made an impact on several schools before committing to attend Indiana University. Has a chance to be very special.

TAPE: https://www.hudl.com/profile/15345105/Shamar-Meikle

2025 – Samari Reed, WR, 6-2, 190, Coconut Creek Monarch. For those who have been watching this gifted football talent perform the past two years have said that this is easily one of the fastest-rising receivers in the state. No matter who he goes up against at any level, he more than holds his own.

Weekend Rewind: Quite An Opening Week 1 in south Florida

If south Florida wanted the spotlight shining on them in the first week of the 2023 high school football season, they certainly lived up to all that pre-season billing.

Whether it was at games throughout the region and state – or at the second annual Broward County National Football Showcase – teams and players showed why south Florida will once again rule the state – with many teams sending a valuable message.

Speaking about the showcase, once again that national attending was evident, especially on Saturday when ESPN and national coverage saw head coach Dameon Jones and his Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna Lions exploded in the second half and beat national power Baltimore St. Frances Academy, 35-14.

Even though St. Thomas Aquinas saw its nearly two-year winning streak come to an end in a 20-7 setback to Bellflower, California powerhouse St. John Bosco, the Raiders and head coach Roger Harriott found out what was needed to make an amazing run at winning another state title.

One of the programs who has had a rough week is head coach Mike Smith and his Plantation American Heritage Plantation, where one of its players nearly lost his young life last week, only to be saved in this life changing evening.

American Heritage rallied and beat St. John’s Prep School of Washington, D.C., capping off the showcase with a 45-20 win.

Other showcase games saw Davie Western and head coach Adam Ratkevich slosh their way to a 14-10 win over Georgia power Milton. Speaking of Georgia, Coconut Creek’s Monarch High and head coach Calvin Davis put it all together in a 50-42 win over Cedar Creek.

Head Coach Matt Dubuc watched his Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs come from behind to beat Cardinal Gibbons of Raliegh, North Carolina, 28-21.

Rounding out the 14-team event were the Miramar Patriots as head coach A.J. Scott and his Patriots hung tough with former Miramar standout Loren Johnson and his Virginia power Highland Springs – losing, 20-14.

NORLAND GETS EVERYONE’S ATTENTION

All off-season, there had been talk that Miami Norland and head coach Darryl Heidelburg would be a team that would not go easy in Class 2M.

On Friday night the Vikings opened the season in a place where the home team had won 95 percent of its home games in the past decade – and were coming off an unbeaten 4S state championship season.

The Vikings put it on the Dreadnaughts, scoring early and often and came home 1-0 with a convincing 48-34 decision.

OTHER LOCAL POWERS START THEIR SEASON OFF

As Norland and the showcase teams had plenty of the spotlight, and for good reason, other state-rated Miami-Dade and Broward schools also had their opportunity to get off to a 1-0 start.

Defending 4A state champion Miami Christopher Columbus and head coach Dave Dunn were on the road and beat a very sound Clearwater Academy International squad, 28-21

One of the programs that everyone will be watching, head coach Tim “Ice” Harris and his Miami Booker T. Washington Tornadoes beat Miami Killian 31-7.

Coach Mike Manasco and his Miami Palmetto Panthers showed how good they will be this season, coming away with a 13-12 victory at defending 3M state runner up Homestead.

Miami Southridge has built into a contender, and head coach Pierre Senatus and his Spartans rolled to a 43-14 against Miami Jackson.

Plantation and veteran head coach Steve Davis is one of those teams that a lot of people are sleeping om this season, but the Colonel’s 51-0 win against Hallandale will get the attention of many in 3M.

It was a tough opening for first year Miami Northwestern head coach Michaelee Harris, who saw his Bulls commit way too many penalties in a 19-13 road loss to Vero Beach 19.

WE ARE UNDER WAY

In addition to those games, south Florida was indeed busy on Week 1. Despite No. 1 Miami Central having the first week off as they get set to play at top-rated Las Vegas Bishop Gorman later this, there were some teams that jumped out to a 1-0 start.

Broward County National Football Showcase – St. John’s College Prep vs. Plantation American Heritage.

The following week after his team opened the 2022 season with tough loss to Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna in the inaugural Broward County National Football Showcase, St. John’s College Prep head coach Pat Ward told the organizers that he wanted to come back.

The experience of playing in an event that was gaining national momentum was something that veteran coach wanted for his players and coaches, and he will make his return with his Cadets as part of tripleheader Saturday.

The 7:30 kickoff on FloSports will head to Plantation American Heritage as head coach Mike Smith and his Patriots look to continue the domination they started in last year’s event – beat Los Alamitos of California handily.

The showdown promises to put an exciting cap on what has been another amazing production in Broward County – with 2024 already being planned out as they largest talent showcase yet.
