Week 5: District Games Taking Center Stage

It’s hard to believe that we are already five weeks into the 2023 high school football season.

It seems that every year the off-season gets longer and the actual season is somewhat shorter.

When we turn the page this week, we will be at the halfway point of the regular season. With state playoffs on the horizon, the district games will certainly be in the spotlight as teams fight for position.

Here is how Week 5 shapes up:

1. Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna (1M, 4-0). LAST WEEK: The Lions held off No.7 Plantation American Heritage, 28-16. THIS WEEK: The long-awaited Thursday ESPN matchup against No. 2 Miami Central. NEXT WEEK: at No. 11 Coconut Creek.

2. Miami Central (2M, 1-1). LAST WEEK: The Rockets and Carol City game was called because of bad weather but will be finished. THIS WEEK: No. 1 Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna. NEXT WEEK: A home game against North Miami Beach.

3. Miami Christopher Columbus (4M, 4-0). LAST WEEK: The Explorers remained unbeaten with a 15-0 win over No. 8 Miami Palmetto. THIS WEEK: A home game against Miami Northwestern. NEXT WEEK: A home game against Miami High.

4. Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (3M, 3-1). LAST WEEK: The Raiders dominated Davie Western, 48-22. THIS WEEK: A competitive home game against Port St. Lucie Treasure Coast. NEXT WEEK: A home game against No. 15 Miramar

5. Miami Norland (2M, 4-0). LAST WEEK: The Vikings continued to roll along with a 42-7 win against Miami Gardens Monsignor Pace. THIS WEEK: A Wednesday home against Hialeah American. NEXT WEEK: Bye.

6. Homestead (3M, 3-1). LAST WEEK: The Broncos had little problem with Southwest Miami, 55-0. THIS WEEK: Bye. NEXT WEEK: A Wednesday home game against South Miami.

7. Plantation American Heritage (2M, 2-1). LAST WEEK: Lost a tough home game against No. 1 Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna, 28-16. THIS WEEK: Bye. NEXT WEEK: No. 12 Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons.

8. Miami Palmetto (4M, 3-1). LAST WEEK: Lost to No. 3 Miami Christopher Columbus, 15-0. THIS WEEK: A home game against Clearwater Academy International. NEXT WEEK: An away game against Coral Gables.

9. Miami Booker T. Washington (2M, 2-1). LAST WEEK: Beat Miami Immaculata LaSalle, 42-0. THIS WEEK: a home game against Miami Carol City. NEXT WEEK: A road game against Miami Jackson.

10. Pompano Beach Blanche Ely (3M, 3-0). LAST WEEK: Beat Coral Springs, 48-0. THIS WEEK: a huge home game against No. 11 Coconut Creek. NEXT WEEK: at Fort Lauderdale.

11. Coconut Creek (3M, 3-1). LAST WEEK: Dominated at home against No. 13 Plantation. THIS WEEK: Another major test with No. 10 Pompano Beach Blanche Ely. NEXT WEEK: It gets no easier as No. 1 Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna comes to town.

12. Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons (2M, 3-1). LAST WEEK: A road win at St. Petersburg Northeast, 38-16. THIS WEEK: Bye. NEXT WEEK: A key district game at No. 7 Plantation American Heritage,

13. Plantation (3M, 3-1). LAST WEEK: The Colonels suffered their first loss of the year on the road against No. 11 Coconut Creek, 36-6. THIS WEEK: Bye. NEXT WEEK: A district game at South Plantation.

14. Coconut Creek Monarch (4M, 3-1). LAST WEEK: The Knights took care of Sunrise Piper, 32-6. THIS WEEK: A road district matchup with Parkland Douglas. NEXT WEEK: A district contest on the roaf against Boca Raton Olympic Heights.

15. Miramar (3M, 2-1). LAST WEEK: The Patriots won their second straight game, 50-0 against Pembroke Pines Flanagan. THIS WEEK: A Saturday night road game at Fort Lauderdale Dillard. NEXT WEEK: An away non district game against No. 4 Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas.

16. Miami Southridge (3M, 3-1). LAST WEEK: The Spartans rebounded with a 25-12 win against Miami Belen Jesuit. THIS WEEK: An away game at Doral Academy. NEXT WEEK: Bye.

17. Hollywood South Broward (3M, 4-0). LAST WEEK: A 2-0 forfeit win against Hallandale. THIS WEEK: A key home district game against No. 18 Dr. Krop. NEXT WEEK: Bye.

18. Miami Dr. Krop (3M, 3-1). LAST WEEK: A 40-6 win against Hollywood Avant Garde Academy. THIS WEEK: A huge road district game against No. 17 Hollywood South Broward. NEXT WEEK: Bye.

19. Miami Edison (2M, 3-0). LAST WEEK: The Red Raiders won a rare game against Miami Northwestern, 17-7. THIS WEEK: A trip to St. Petersburg to play Lakewood. NEXT WEEK: A district game against Miami Immaculata LaSalle.

20. Davie Western (4M, 1-2). LAST WEEK: The Wildcats dropped a second consecutive game, 48-20, to No. 4 Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas. THIS WEEK: A home game against Coral Springs Taravella. NEXT WEEK: Home against Sunrise Piper.
