Week 1 State Playoffs Sets The Table For The Future

If you follow high school football in south Florida, you already know that Week 1 of the state playoffs was just a small appetizer for what’s ahead.

While there were no real upsets – other than No. 8 Plantation beating No. 1 Fort Myers Dunbar, which really wasn’t that much of a surprise – what the first week did was set the tempo for the next four weeks.

While we will examine the next round of the playoffs throughout the week, we will go back to the opening round – where Plantation and head coach Steve Davis went across state and took a Region 4 6A game, 44-20. But the Colonels were not alone. Other programs engaged with Lee County (Fort Myers) and came out on top.

Programs such as 6A Region games - Coconut Creek 36, South Fort Myers 12 and Miami Northwestern 71, Fort Myers 19 and 5A Region 4 contests Miami Killian 66, Fort Myers Cypress Lake 0 and Fort Lauderdale Stranahan 22, Estero 7.

Class 4A Region 4 also was a spotlight with Miami Booker T. Washington coming up with a 30-6 win over Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian 6, and after coming close in their regular season meeting, Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest got by previously unbeaten Miami Immaculata-LaSalle, 10-7. Coach Gerald Cox and the Tornadoes will play against No. 1 seed Miami Gulliver Prep and No. 2 Cardinal Gibbons will have a rematch with Pine Crest in Round 2.

8A Region 4 is also something that fans are watching. First round wins by No. 1 Western (43-7 over Parkland Douglas), No. 5 Miami Christopher Columbus (54-0 over Miami Dr. Krop). No. 3 Deerfield Beach over No. 6 Boca Raton in a rematch game, 21-7 and No, 2 Miami Palmetto’s 56-21 decision over Coral Springs Coral Glades.

Just a reminder that we will have our Top 20 on Tuesday, Complete Second Round breakdown on Wednesday along with daily coverage throughout the weekend.
