With Penn State head football coach James Franklin and assistant JuJuan Seider watching from the sideline, Traz Powell Stadium certainly lived up to its nickname – “The Mecca” on Friday evening.
Held up for well over an hour because of the usual late summer, early fall lightning storms, the Vikings and Bulls delivered in just another week of competitive south Florida football.
While other regions of the nation can boast impressive teams, and for good reason, not one area of this country can offer up more programs loaded with elite prospects like Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.
As Teddy Bridgewater and his team attempted to establish themselves as one of the best teams in the state, a program that earned a reputation in 2023 for championship football, Miami Norland, once again came from behind and won a thrilling 21-17 decision that ended after midnight on Saturday morning.
Used to thrilling finishes, the Vikings and veteran head coach Daryle Heidelburg moved to 3-0 as defense and special teams came up big.
Perhaps the biggest play of the game came when Terrence Honeywood scored on a 38-yard punt return for a touchdown to give the Vikings a 21-17 lead with just over 5 minutes left. He then put the game away with 26 seconds left, intercepting a pass deep in Vikings territory.
In addition to that thriller, south Florida also dodged the storms to produce some impressive games.
