As we have continued to say about the talent in south Florida, when it comes to top-flight prospects, even the best fly under the radar.
As many defensive backs seem to get their place in the spotlight, others, who are easily as good, sometimes never get that chance.
The one thing you learn in six decades of covering high school football – especially in south Florida – it’s the athletes who make plays that earn the respect and admiration. Not always with the most stars.
Those who defend stars are usually people who have a stake in it – whether as a recruiting service who makes them to sell subscriptions – or those who work for different companies. But that is all fine and good. That is what they do.
Having the opportunity to actually watch and evaluate these quality prospects in live games and NOT just some shorts and T-shirt gives you a major advantage of seeing what football players can do in big time situations. It also lets you measure character.
CONNER PROFILE
PLAYER: Rance Conner
POSITION: CB
SCHOOL: Miami Booker T. Washington
CLASS: 2021
HEIGHT: 5-10
WEIGHT: 180
SCOUTING: From the first time we watched this young man perform two years ago, it was evident that if he grew and continued to learn, there would be very few who would be able to match his skills, intensity and overall athleticism.
Rance Conner is a football player who is always around the ball – and while he may not bring flash and an “I” mentality to the game – he is a producer who fills up stat sheets and brings a lot to watching game films.
Conner is a pure team football player with no frills and nothing but three hours of giving you the best.
While he may not be mentioned with many of the top tier defensive backs in south Florida, every member of the 2019 state championship team will admit that winning it all would have been mighty tough without his play-making abilities.
