While numbers are never the complete story, how about 10-3, 9-3 and 9-3?
Before last year’s 3-9 record, the Miami Booker T. Washington Tornadoes had compiled 28 wins in three seasons and were among the top football program in Florida.
You remember this program! The dominant orange and black that won state titles, were recognized nationally and produced collegiate and professional talent.
While the days of the Harris and Tillman families are in the past, what this program has right now is still a football mind in head coach Dorrean James and a staff that knows everything what this program has accomplished through the years. They saw it firsthand from playing and coaching against this machine in Overtown.
Okay, now that big question. How does this group of coaches and an ever-changing roster the past few seasons get back to where this team walks on the field and immediately strikes fear into the opposition?
First of all we are in way different times than we were five, six and seven years ago. Loyalty and tradition mean nothing to the players of today, but that does not mean that you fold up your tent and just give in to the transfers and the fact that everyone paints this program as something that flourished in the past but may not be part of what’s popular today.
James and his staff weren’t raised in these communities to give in to that follow-the-leader mentality. Even in a losing season, they took a chance to play in the Florida High School Athletic Association’s first ever post season for teams that didn’t advance to the state playoffs by beating Hallandale and taking a North Miami Beach team that made the state finals right down to the wire.
There is plenty of confidence after a productive spring and the addition of some new faces that the Tornadoes are ready to start the climb back. Only time will tell!
Here is a look at some of the faces you will see this summer and into the 2026 season.
While many still need playing time, get some film together and competition, they have at least taken a leap to be the answer and not the problem.
