Miami-Dade, Broward Send 120 Boys’ Wresters To State

When the state wrestling tournament – boys and girls – open today at the Silver Spurs (1875 Silver Spur Lane Kissimmee, FL 34744) Miami-Dade and Broward will be well represented.

With powerhouse South Dade expected to win yet another 3A state title, and Pembroke Pines Somerset Academy and Miami Mater Lakes expected to be in the mix in 1A, things will get mighty exciting.

From an individual standpoint, 120 boys will head this year’s state championships from the boys side.

The girls will once again take center stage as they will crown state champions for the second straight year.

RETURNING CHAMPS

Here is a look at a few local wrestlers looking to add to their success. On the boys’ side, going for two state titles will be Gabriel Tellez (Southwest Miami, 113 pounds), Frankie Florio (Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons, 145 pounds), Kendrick Hodge (Pembroke Pines Somerset, 160 pounds) and Ansel Cervantes (Homestead South Dade, 195 pounds).

Going for three will be Nicholas Yancey (Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons, 138 pounds) and South Dade junior Sawyer Bartelt, 220 pounds)

North Miami's Mya Bethel (155) is a returning champion on the girls' side.
