While football fans are waiting for many of the traditional powers and other programs to return to action – delayed by Covid-19, there is another marquee matchup on tap this evening.
When head coach Pat Surtain and his 5A Plantation American Heritage Patriots travel to Hollywood to take on head coach Dameon Jones and his 1-0 Lions, there may not be a better matchup to watch.
Chaminade-Madonna, winners of three consecutive 3A state championships, started off this crazy 2020 season last Friday night with a 27-14 win over defending 2A state champion Champagnat Catholic.
Tonight’s (7:00) game is sold out – with no tickets being sold at the gate and a limited crowd expected.
The Lions will once again ride the legs of University of Miami commitment Thad Franklin who scored 4 times and had 160 yards rushing in the first game of the season.
It’s a young offense that is still learning and coming together and will be tested.
On the defensive side of the ball, this team already showed that it will be impressive – with playmakers such as Auburn University junior commitment Brian Dilworth leading the way along with some other key players.
LOOK FOR THE PATRIOTS TO BE INSPIRED
Failing to reach the state championship game for the second straight year, head coach Pat Surtain and his football team will be hungry – as a young program will have a chance to showcase some quality prospects.
Among the players to watch include University of Miami senior commit James Williams, a gifted four-year starter at the varsity level between Monsignor Pace, Western and American Heritage.
Other seniors include: recent Syracuse commit Oronde Gadsden II, WR, Vinson Davis II, Slot, Brian Blades, S, Boogsie Silvera, S, Chris Stumpo, OL and newcomer Michael Watkins III, WR.
One of the best junior classes in south Florida includes: Monsignor Pace transfer Belizaire Bassette II, DT, Marvin Jones Jr., DE, Jaeden Kinlock, LB, Earl Little Jr., CB and versatile Jacolby Spells, CB/WR.
The 2023 class is also special with last year’s leading tackler David Vadala (LB) leading the way. There is also Joey Colosi, Daemon Fagan, S, Mark Fletcher, RB, Reggie Foster, RB and first year starting quarterback Blake Murphy.
Losing to Miami Northwestern last year, this is a team that lost some leaders, but also brings back some impressive young athletes.
