THE SCOOP

When the 2021 season was over, the Pat Surtain era came to an end in Plantation.

A program that had won more than its share of games and state championships had fallen off and dropped four games.

Coaches and fans had gotten so used to getting to that state final, dropping four games in one season was simply unheard of.

St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Lucie Treasure Coast, Jacksonville Trinity Christian and Miami Central would come out on top against the Patriots, and while three of them would end up as state champions, there was no consolation prize. Not at this school. Not with a program that had won 90 percent of its games in the past decade.

Enter Mike Smith. A coach who has been through all of this developing and winning – and while Surtain will be missed as he heads off to the Miami Dolphins, Smith is more than ready and capable of guiding this program.

With plenty of talent on hand, here is a look at some of the prospects to keep an eye on this coming season:
