It’s the third day of Greater Miami Athletic Conference (GMAC) Week and the first marquee matchup will take place.
While the defending 3A state champion Miami Northwestern Bulls, No. 2 in south Florida, come in as a favorite this evening – when they take on 7A Miami Palmetto, rated No. 8 in south Florida, at Traz Powell Stadium (7:30), it will be the final real tune-up before the start of the state playoffs in the second week of November.
For first year head coach Jaquatin Victrum and his football team, it comes down to taking each game one at a time. This is a program loaded with talent that will be the favorite in every game the rest of the way – and when you see what prospects they have on both sides of the ball – it is indeed a no brainer.
A potential rematch with longtime rival Miami Central looms as the only other obstacle. No matter who they would meet in the state title game – even Jacksonville Raines – they could come in as much as a three-score favorite.
THE PANTHERS HAVE SOMETHING TO PROVE
While head coach Mike Manasco and his Panthers come into tonight’s game with plenty of optimism, no matter what the outcome may be, the only thing that matters is finally getting out of south Florida – and that means beating Miami Christopher Columbus for the second time in the same season. Something they have never done before.
This is a program that has some quality talent, and if they are going to have a chance in this meeting, mistakes cannot be made and getting some key breaks will be essential.
They do have a common opponent. The Panthers beat Columbus, 24-21 – while the Bulls had their way with the Explorers, 41-6.
