KISSIMMEE - After this past weekend at the Silver Spurs Arena, there is simply no doubt which region stands above the rest when it comes to boys wrestling in the Sunshine State.
While the girls did their thing with three individual state champions, including North Miami senior Mya Bethel, who became the first ever female wrestler to win four state titles in Florida high school competition, and 25 state placers and a second place team finish by South Dade, the boys dominated the three days.
Besides Bethel, other individual winners were Miami Southridge freshman Abigail Gonzalez (110) and South Dade’s unbeaten Willow White (120) of Homestead South Dade.
SOUTH DADE STILL ON TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN
Where do we start? Let’s begin where head coach Vic Balmeceda and his South Dade Bucs won their 27th state title, which includes 20 IBT (11th straight) crowns and seven dual champions.
South Dade crowned state titles with Guillermo Jaramillo (126), Jovani Solis (138), Elvis Solis (144), Armand Williams (150), Tyree Graham (157), and Willie White (165).
Kaleb Williams (120), Jonathan Moreno (175), and Daguy Massillon (285) also reached the finals.
Other 3A champions included Lazaro Soto (106 - Southwest Miami), Jovanni Tovar (120 - Miami Southridge), Illia Kyryianenko (132 - Hollywood South Broward), Connor Bonney (175 - Miami Palmetto), Myron Mendez (215 - Southwest Miami) and Ryan Miret (285 - Miami Southridge).
SOMERSET ACADEMY RALLIES FOR TEAM TITLE
Last year, Pembroke Pines Somerset Academy took home the 1A state wrestling title, but with enrollment growing, they were elevated to 2A. No problem!
Veteran head coach Joe Blasucci used state titles from Tristan Sainz (150), Eric Hodge (157), Michael Sainz (175), and Mateo Martinez (190) to come from 7.5 down and beat defending state champion Tampa Jesuit by going 4-1 in the finals.
The Panthers placed nine wrestlers.
HOW ABOUT MATER LAKES?
Over the past few years, something special has been brewing in Hialeah – and after a 1A dual team championship back in January, head coach Brandon Neifeld and his Mater Lakes Bears rolled the competition by 63 points and left NO doubt in taking home their first IBT title.
With Kellen (113) and Keagan Mesina (120) leading the way, Mater Lakes Academy had five individual state titles.
Ethan Tran (126) and Kalias Nazario (165) also won state titles for the Bears. The only downer on the evening came when Damian Soto (190) was injured in the finals on an “illegal move” and was carried out of the arena on a spinal protection board. He was awarded the state title.
Other 1A champions were Elijah Castanon (106 - Miami Christian) and Cardinal Gibbons' three-time state winner Michael Mocco (215).
The boys ended with 84 state placers!
