Ask anyone outside of the Tri-County Football Championships and they do not have a clue what you are talking about, but that’s okay.
Over the next month, those teams left to “opt out” of the state series because of Covid concerns in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties, will have a chance to claim one of three titles that will be up for grabs.
Some impressive programs will play in the small shadow of the FHSAA State Championships this season with pride and getting film against top competition the objective.
In three weeks of polling, today’s final listing will serve as the seeding for next week’s first ever event.
“We are so excited about the chance to continue playing our season and give our athletes a chance to get some additional film,” said Miami Killian head coach Derrick Gibson. “This is a great thing they are having. Without a lot of organization, this could never have been attempted.”
Because south Florida is annually the epicenter for major high school football talent, having many teams play 3,4 and 5 games and end the year would not be fair to anyone.
The FHSAA not putting everyone on a level playing field was a concern to many in south Florida, so when private schools – along with five Greater Miami Athletic Conference teams opting in to play for a state title, the remainder of the public schools – and GMAC member Miami Christopher Columbus had this opportunity to compete in a three county championship. Not just any three counties. Perhaps the best three counties in the country for churning out football talent.
As a reminder, the playoffs will consist of a Gold and Silver bracket that includes a minimum of two teams each from Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties. Two at-large teams selected from any of the three counties will round out the two brackets.
The semifinals are set for week-ending Dec. 11, with the championships set for Dec. 21-22 at a site to be announced.
Should any team be affected by COVID, that part of the bracket would be vacated and the opponent movers on to the next round.
Seedings the for the quarterfinal rounds set for the week of Friday, Dec. 4 will be announced late today (Wednesday) afternoon.
