State Title Rematch Is State’s Biggest Game Tonight In West Palm Beach

Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna (4-2, 1-0) at West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman (5-1, 0-0). When they squared off for the 1A state title on December 11th of last year, there was a feeling that the game between state and national powerhouse Chaminade-Madonna and Cardinal Newman would be a formality.

If past results was to be an indication, the Lions had never had a problem with the Crusaders as they were making their 10th consecutive trip to the state title game.

When the game had ended at Pitbull Stadium on the campus of Florida International University, it was Cardinal Newman that would parade around the field with trophy in hand and a stunning 17-14 win.

The victory changed the way everyone felt about head coach Jack Daniels and his football program. This program that was starting to make some noise finally got over the hump by stunning head coach Dameon Jones and his team.

In the months after that win, both teams were elevated to 2A, and along with several other programs were considered to be among a group that would make an impact this year – and they both have.

Add to this matchup was the fact that both programs were added to the same district, and October 9th in West Palm Beach was quickly circled by both schools and football fans across the state.

Tonight (6:30), a sellout crowd will watch these two schools meet once again with just about everything at stake.

While a loss for either team could be a blow to their hopes of appearing in the inaugural “Open Division” – with the “top” eight teams in the state battling for supremacy – you never know as both have played a competitive schedule.

The Crusaders come in after winning the past two games against Jensen Beach and Delray Beach Atlantic.

They have scored 186 points and have given up 105.

The Lions head into the game after a tough 21-20 loss at home against the No. 1 team in the country, Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas.

They have scores 212 points this season – while yielding 127.

No matter what the outcome, you have two programs that have shown that they are among the best in Florida – and while the season is far from over – this is a key contest for many reasons!
