SPRING FOCUS – It’s Back To Work For Booker T. Washington

Just one year removed another state championship, 3-4 happened to Miami Booker T. Washington.

To credit then first year head coach Gerald Cox, the season came with many valid reasons and plenty of obstacles.

The Covid delays, no conditioning and late start to the season was perhaps the biggest reason.

In losing to Christopher Columbus (28-12), North Miami Beach (20-14), Glades Central (16-13) and Carol City (22-21) in the Tri-County playoffs, this team gained confidence and a belief.

The wins against Norland (32-7), American (37-0) and Pahokee (41-6) also served as a reminder that the talent level is still high – and this program will once again be in the 4A mix in 2021 with plenty of new faces.

The Class of 2022 (rising seniors) will have nationally-rated receiver Adam Moore (6-2, 190), who re-classified from 2023, where he was already one of the top prospects. This quality talent is indeed a game-changer.

The Tornadoes also have major prospects Semaj Flagg (DB, 6-2, 175) and Jason Jeanty (OT, 6-4, 290). Both are highly regarded and can play this game. Both will be needed in the 2021 season.

In addition to those three prospects, look for Antwan Bennie (LB, 6-0, 190), Jaylan Chandler (RB, 6-0, 200), Donte Easterling (LB, 5-10, 185), Jacob Love (WR, 6-2, 175), Walton McCollum (CB, 5-9, 165), Xavier McElliott (WR, 6-0, 175), emerging Cornell Roberts (WR, 5-10, 165) and linebacker Jakarie Sands (5-11, 195) tp make a huge impact, relaying on maturity and experience alone.

EMERGING JUNIOR (2023) TALENT

When it comes having depth and talent that is ready to plug in, Overtown and surrounding areas are always ready to step up their talent game. Too many of these youngsters grew up watching the Tornadoes dominate the opposition and have always wanted to be a part of it.

The Class of 2023 is stacked with young playmakers – such as rising quarterback Hezekiah Harris (6-1, 175), Xavier Irvin (WR, 5-10, 175), Andrew Johnson (RB, 5-9, 170), Davion Lang (LB, 6-0, 180) and cornerback Fabian Scott (6-1, 170).

The Class of 2024 is also going to be fun to watch – with Jamorie Flagg (DT, 6-3, 255), Jadarious Gaines (RB, 5-10, 180), Claudell Sherman (QB, 5-10, 165) and running back Antwan Smith (5-10, 225).
