SPRING FOCUS: Gulliver Prep Learned Valuable Lessons In 2020

What Miami Gulliver Prep found out in three hours in the season finale against Cardinal Gibbons, could go a long way in determining the Raiders’ future.

Unlike the season before when they went toe-to-toe with Booker T. Washington when they had reason to believe that they should have won the game against the Tornadoes, they had nothing to say after the Chiefs came south and took care of business – from start to finish.

What that game illustrated is line play. The Chiefs beat St. Thomas Aquinas and took American Heritage down to the wire and learned that if you control what goes on up front, you win the battle – especially with the amazing skill players the Raiders have.

But before you jump off a cliff when talking about the upcoming season, lets focus in on the fact that Gulliver Prep has won 15 of the past 17 games, lost to the past two 4A state champions, including Cardinal Gibbons last year, and comes back loaded with prospects in the 2022 and 2023 classes.

What this program has become is a place where elite talent can be found. In the rising senior class, you have standout quarterback Carson Haggard (6-0, 170 – 4.2 GPA), who put up some huge numbers the past two seasons, the No. 1 kicking prospect in the nation in Will Bettridge (5-11, 165 – 4.3 GPA), major game-changing receiver/H-Back Decarlo Donaldson (6-2, 215 – 2.6 GPA), versatile Travious Lathan (LB/WR, 6-2, 205 – 3.2 GPA) and linebacker/safety standout Jay’von Only (5-11, 205).

In addition, there also standouts Patrick Atkins (OL/DL, 6-1, 280), Jaime Garcia-Del Cerro (S/OLB, 6-2, 185 – 4.9 GPA), Bakari Edwards (DE, 6-2, 240 – 5.0 GPA), Jonathan Fyne (OLB, 5-11, 190 3.7 GPA), Kamar Meza (RB/DB, 5-9, 160 – 3.3 GPA), Justin Neyra (TE/OT/DE/LS, 6-3, 190 – 3.5 GPA) and defensive end Kareem Wilson (6-4, 245).

THE CLASS OF 2023 IS SUPER TALENTED

The reason for much of the optimism, heading into spring is what this program has in this rising junior class. Big time prospects who everyone in the nation has been recruiting – and for good reason.

Among that group are nationally-rated prospects D.C. Cannon (DB, 5-9, 160), super gifted Jalen Brown (WR, 6-1, 165, 3.0 GPA), FSU commitment Lamont Green (DE, 6-4, 220), fast-rising Shelton Green (OL, 6-3, 320), Daniel Harris (DB, 6-2, 165), ultra-talented and well-rounded Sedrick Irvin Jr (RB, 5-11, 185 – 4.2 GPA), Stefano Luis (QB, 5-10, 160 – 4.1 GPA), impressive Jaden Outar (DB, 5-7, 150) and major athlete Antonio Smith (DB, 6-3, 175 – 3.0 GPA).

The Class of 2024 also has some football talent that will play a huge role in 2021. Players like Rocco Bradley (WR, 6-3), Dylan Calero (LB/FB, 5-10. 205), Brandon Rosenthal (DE/TE, 6-1), Cosme Salas (K/RB), Dominic Veloso (DE/TE/LB, 6-1) and versatile Jack Gonzalez-Whitehouse (DE/TE/LB, 6-1).
