SPRING FOCUS: Fort Lauderdale Continues To Make The Grade

There is no getting around the fact that when it comes to football, Fort Lauderdale High is doing everything right.

Coming off a 3-2 Covid-shortened season, veteran head coach Richard Dunbar has his alma mater right where he wants them.

As this program continues to grow and come together, you can credit team unity and getting it done in the classroom as the reasons why.

When it comes to grades, Dunbar and the administration will not compromise in the classroom. They never have!

As the Flying Ls soar toward spring, 10 starters have a 3.0 grade point average or better – with the rest of the team right around the 3.0 mark – and that is something that that this program has been all about.

When it’s time to move on to the next level, Fort Lauderdale has quietly sent several student/athletes on to the next level, and that is how success is measured in eastern Fort Lauderdale.

CLASS OF 2022 EMBRACES LEADERSHIP POSITION

The success of the 2021 team will be a direct result on what happens with this rising senior class in 2022. There are enough returnees and talent to provide the experience and leadership.

Among those prospects ready to take control include

Blesd Jordan Davis (RB, 5-9, 205 – 2.9 GPA), Richard Francois (FS/WR, 6-1, 170 – 3.2 GPA), Richard Frater (WR/DB, 6-0, 170 – 3.5 GPA), Malik Knight (WR, 6-1, 172 – 3.2 GPA), Franklin Moore (WR, 5-11, 165), Julian Olbel (OLB, 6-0, 215), Darien Parris Jr (OT, 6-3, 320) and offensive lineman Toni Watkins (6-3, 355 – 3.6 GPA)

UNDERCLASSMEN TO THE RESCUE

When it comes to developing younger prospects, Dunbar and the Flying Ls are right on top of it – with several key athletes ready to make a contribution.

Among the Class of 2023 (rising juniors) players looking to step up are William Carey (PK, 5-9, 140 – 4.917), Luca Foerch (QB, 5-11, 175 – 3.2 GPA), Joshua Jennings (RB, 5-10, 180 – 3.39 GPA) and receiver Oscar Koenig (5-11, 175 – 3.8 GPA)

The Class of 2024 (rising sophomores) will also be impressive – with Owen Emerson (OL, 6-1, 335 – 4.33 GPA) and Kyle Ford (Athlete, 5-10, 180 -3.4 GPA) ready to chip in as well.

While this team continues to make strides on the football field, they have already found the formula in the classroom, where everyone is certainly on the same page.
