Somerset Academy South (Homestead) Ready For Year 2

After experiencing an inaugural football season, head coach Andre Daniels and his Somerset Academy South (Homestead) program made some major off-season adjustments.

What Daniels has learned in his coaching career is that you never get comfortable with winning or losing – and that is what keeps the fire and competition burning for this program.

Heading into the 2021 season, the Hurricanes will rely on a number of seniors to give this program some experience and leadership.

As the track coach at the school, Daniels has made sure that the football prospects need to out on the track in the spring – working on speed and athleticism.

With seniors (Class of 2022) like safety Shawn Smith Jr. (6-0, 170), Leonello Collins II (Edge/TE, 6-0, 180), cornerback Tonio Evans (5-11, 155), inside linebacker Xavier Moore (5-10, 220), offensive lineman Trevor Perkins (6-2, 230), quarterback Jeovany Hernandez (6-1, 170) and gifted receiver Jimmy Brown Jr. (6-1 180).

2022 PLAYER TO WATCH: Osamuyimen “Marvin” Izevbigie (Edge, 6-1, 210).

A STRONG UNDERCLASS = BRIGHT FUTURE

If this program is going to continue to improve each season, the underclassmen will be vital in the overall growth. The Hurricanes do have some elite athletes who are looking to make an impact this season.

Prospects like Class of 2023 standouts Fernando Barrera (OLDL, 5-11, 280), versatile Jalan Toomer (OLB/WR, 6-3, 200), outside linebacker Phillip Jones (6-1, 200) and kicker/punter Jason Zapata (5-11, 155).

2023 PLAYERS TO WATCH: Rasheim Lipscomb (RB, 6-3, 195) and South Dade transfer Dontrell Lipscomb (RB, 5-10, 180).

Speaking of kicker, the Hurricanes have easily one of the nation’s best in Class of 2024 standout Gabriel Perez, a 6-1, 200-pounder, who has certainly turned heads this off-season.

In addition, the Hurricanes also have Class of 2024 standouts Chaz Milton Jr. (RB, 5-9, 170), Javon Reid (WR/CB, 6-0, 180), Glenn Smith III (WR, 5-10, 155), rising quarterback Sean Hill (6-1 180), offensive lineman Ricky Martinez (6-3, 300) and defensive lineman Antoine Rozier (6-3, 200).

Also, look for Class of 2024 standouts Keith Berry Jr. (OLB, 6-0, 180) and Victor Blanco (TE/OT, 6-2, 220).

Class of 2025 freshmen will also help to lay the foundation for depth – with offensive lineman Brandon Munoz (6-0, 260), versatile Nick Rispa (WR/CB, 5-11, 150), Anthony Rozier (WR/CB, 5-11, 150), Ryan Perry (OL, 6-4, 330), receiver Kai Sullivan (5-6 135) and Angel Torres (OL/DL, 6-2, 330). Also, keep an eye out for 8th grade cornerback Donye Fussell (5-10, 160).
