Northwestern, Nick Lennear Win ‘Round 1’ Against Rival Central

Back during the summer at a competitive 7-on-7 tournament, Miami Northwestern junior receiver Nick Lennear made a catch and quickly proclaimed: “nobody can cover me.”

On Saturday afternoon before a sellout crowd at Traz Powell Stadium, playing against their biggest rivals Miami Central, the No. 1 receiver in the state of Florida continued to back up that statement as the Bulls (5-1) finally broke through against the Rockets, 30-21.

It had been since 2020 since Northwestern had been able to come out on top against Central, but this team would not be denied in a late afternoon game that brought in fans from all over the state.

While Northwestern won the game, many experts believe that this was the first of two meetings. With both programs so far ahead of the Class 3A competition in the state, they are almost certain to meet in early round of the state playoffs in November.

Lennear, who is always a major force on the offensive side of the ball, got it done on defense as well, coming up with an interception to start the second half and had a perfectly timed hit to break up a pass near the goal line in the fourth quarter.

Northwestern took a 24-21 lead into the half behind a pair of touchdown passes from sophomore Neimann Lawrence and a defensive score from senior safety Tedarius Hughes.

After an scoring outburst in the first half, the two teams combined for just two Bulls’ field goals in the final 24 minutes. The win was not only the first for the team, first-year coach Jaquatin Victrum also broke through with a huge victory but knows that they will see head coach Derrick Gibson and the Rockets again.

Other key players in the game made an impact as well. Central senior linebacker Karon Mayock (Florida State commit) had several impact plays.

Northwestern wide receiver Calvin Russell (Syracuse commit) caught a touchdown pass in the first half.

Central running back Jayden Ford (FIU commit) opened the scoring with a 95-yard kickoff return.
