MIAMI GARDENS, Florida – What Florida Memorial University’s football team found out the past few years is if you are going to progress, there is a need to recruit talent who can bring you to that next level.
With national runner up West Palm Beach Keiser University and Miami Gardens neighbors St. Thomas University making a huge impact in the NAIA conference, the only way that second year head coach Bobby Rome and his staff will be able to compete is to get some impact prospects.
Using the first National Signing Day to bring in some transfers and infuse the Lions with older talent, mission was accomplished – with talent that has already played a few years.
In this past week’s National Signing Day, the objective was to not only bring in some more veteran prospects, but also tap into the high schools as well.
Among those gifted student/athletes coming aboard this past week include Jermaine Beard (DT, 6-2, 240 – Miami Norland), Derwin Black III (OT, 6-6, 290 – Winter Haven), Deante Brickhouse (LB, 6-0, 190 – Western Branch High School), Deondre Chambers (OT, 6-5, 290 – Garden City Community College), Kevin Charles (OG, 6-4, 340 – Miami-Dade Christian), Jahmal Covington (OT, 6-5, 345 – Greenacres John I. Leonard), Gary Cribbs (WR, 5-9, 180 – Miami Central) and Palatka High product Jaques Fenderson (DT, 6-1, 260).
The Lions also brought in standout Kamari Frederick (DT, 6-0, 290 – Pompano Beach Blanche Ely), Nathaniel Gibson (DE, 6-0, 230 – Miami Central), Chris Mason Jr. (Athlete, 6-0, 180 – Fort Lauderdale Stranahan), Travon Miller (RB, 5-8, 170 – Miami Central) and Dyshaun Newby (WR, 5-10, 175 – Deerfield Beach MTI Prep).
The class continued with Joshua Nwankpa (OT, 6-5, 335 – Terrell High School), Rackwon Pericle (DT, 6-2, 300 – Pompano Beach Blanche Ely), Deonte Rucker (QB, 6-2, 190 – Glenville), Izell Sanders (DB, 6-1, 190 – Central State), Morris Thomas (LB, 6-0, 220 – Miami Norland), Marques Turner (DE, 6-4, 220 – Akron Buchtel, Ohio), Sylvester Ware IV (DE, 6-2, 230 – Rochester Community College) and talented Marcus Williams (WR, 6-0, 205 – Pompano Beach Blanche Ely).
EARLY NATIONAL SIGNING DAY
In addition to last week, the Lions took advantage of early National Signing Day in December with some transfers.
Among those were Jamal Browder (WR, 5-11, 180 – Chadron State), Michael Caballero (FB, 6-1, 250 – Windsor Forest), Shannon Carter (DB, 6-1, 180 – Deerfield Beach MTI Prep), Joshua Clark (WR, 5-9, 185 – Thaddeus Stevens), Jalen Davis (WR, 6-4, 190 – Shaw University), Jeremiah Dillard (WR, 6-1, 170 – Cleveland Heights), Julius Faulkner (TE, 6-2, 230 – Cass Tech High, Detroit, Michigan), Jeremiah Feliciano (OL, 6-4, 334 – Minnesota State), Nicholas Jefferson (WR, 5-9, 170, Carson Newman) and Charles Philias, LB, 6-1, 220 - Ave Maria).
