The great thing about football in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties is the opportunity to watch so many quality athletes – year-round.

Every Wednesday we have the opportunity to shine a spotlight on talented football prospects – in all classes – that are making an impression locally, regionally, statewide and even nationally.

While we turn on the TV every Saturday and watch talented players who grew up in the #305 and #954 making an impact, we also look back to where it all began – on youth and high school football fields from the Florida Keys to the Palm Beach County line.

Today, we bring you five more football players who are not only making an impression here but also making a name for themselves as players that college coaches and fans are watching all over.

2028 - Drew Barbar, WR, 6’0, 160, Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy. One of the real under-the-radar athletes who has been known as a basketball prospect, but his work on the football field has certainly gotten him into the spotlight on an offense that is always wide open and is fun to be a part of. Currently leads the state of Florida with 58 receptions for 1,212 yards and 11 scores. He is also versatile enough to play in the defensive secondary.

2027 – Peyton Catronio, Hybrid/LB/Athlete, 5’11, 200, Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons – 3.8 GPA. One of the leaders on a Chiefs’ defense that has been impressive all season. Had a huge outing on Monday night in a 44-0 win against Fort Lauderdale Dillard in a key district matchup with 3 sacks and numerous pressures in a shutout performance. This is someone that has been a catalyst and senior leader for this program and also gets it done in the classroom.

2027 - Dashaun Collins, DE, 6’3, 205, Miami Killian. May we introduce you to the nation’s leader in quarterback sacks! This impressive talent hit the ground running and has been impressive for the Cougars and head coach Rudy Trevino during a district championship season and 6-1 record with 19 sacks. This is someone who many had not had on their radar screen, but this young man is a difference maker who is on a mission to not only get this program deep in the state playoffs but also make a name for himself – which he has!

2027 - Abdul Hopkins, Athlete, 6’2, 190, Hialeah American. When we watched him earlier this season in a game against North Miami, this impressive and way under-the-radar talent completely took over the game for the Patriots with three interceptions and numerous plays that gave this program a huge win. That was certainly not the only contest that this impressive talent had a hand in. In last week’s victory, he added two more picks and sits atop all Florida players with 7 7 for a team is 5-2 and headed toward the post season.

2028 – Jeremiah Milcent, QB, 5’11, 155, Coconut Creek Monarch – 3.8 GPA. When we watched him earlier this season, there were very few – if anyone who had an idea how good this quality talent could be. Those who had watched him at the youth level and followed him in high school knew that he had the potential to be special. But through the first seven games of the season – against a very competitive schedule – this young man has thrown for 1,765 yards and 16 touchdowns, turning the heads of college recruiters and opposing teams.
