As many athletes and parents still have Covid-19 and the start of the 2020 high school football season on their minds, it was time to get out of the house and compete safely last Saturday at Carter Park in Fort Lauderdale.

With Torrian Wilson from “Crafting Linemen” and Javon Gopie from the “Sack Sensei” on hand with plenty of other qualified coaches a solid group of linemen came for two sessions – with the Class of 2021 and 2022 taking center stage early, and the future of high school football – the Classes of 2023, 2024 and 2025 coming in for the early afternoon session.

With plenty of water, hand sanitizers and and masks in place, the competition was indeed fierce and very impressive.

“I was really impressed with these young men out there,” Wilson said. “There was some rust, but that is to be expected after such a long layoff, but technically, you had to be very impressed.”

TURNING SOME HEADS

Here are a few of those who attended that turned some heads:

2021 – Isaiah Bunn, OL, Deerfield Beach. From the time he started at Piper, this was a talent who was willing to do anything it took to attract college attention – and by playing all three positions – he has accomplished that, with college offers coming in as he heads toward his final season.

2021 – Travis Burke, OL, South Broward. When you gain 55 pounds and nearly six inches in less than a year, there are many adjustments needed to make – and while this defensive end and long snapper is willing to do what it takes to get to that next level. Very athletic prospect who also plays baseball for the Bulldogs.

2022 – Jackson Crozier, OL, Cardinal Gibbons. The fifth brother to play football – and by looking at the previous four, this is a young man who certainly be very special over the next two years.

2021 – Marco Fugar, OL, St. Thomas Aquinas. Making his way over from Plantation in the off-season, interest has been there from several schools including the University of Pittsburgh. While he is still raw, the athleticism is there.

2021 – Gunnar Hansen, OL, St. Thomas Aquinas. Already committed to attend Vanderbilt University, this is a very talented and hard-working prospect who is very much looking to play his first season or the defending state champion Raiders.

2022 – Kenyatta Jackson Jr., DE, Chaminade-Madonna. There are very few football players in this class that has the upside that this amazing prospect has. He is quick, long and very quick off the ball for the three-time defending 3A state champions.

2022 – Tellek Lockette, OL, Miami Northwestern. A key member over the past two years for the state champions, the son of University of Miami assistant coach Telly Lockette, has done some amazing things and continues to pick up valuable things that will help him continue to mature and grow.

2022 – Elijah Miller, OL, Miami Central. Yet another talented lineman on perhaps the most gifted unit in Florida, his strength and athletic ability – combined with a solid work ethic has made this quality talent someone to keep an eye on.

2021 – Tyreak Sapp, DL, St. Thomas Aquinas. For the past three years, this is a dominating football talent who heads into his final season with a chance to be very special for the Raiders. Was committed to attend the University of Florida early on – and has shown that he is tough, game-changing and very athletic. Headed to the state wrestling championships last spring as a No. 1 seed at heavyweight.

2022 – Kymani Williams, DE, Miramar Everglades. Another impressive football player who had a tremendous camp on Saturday and showed just why he is the next rising standout who is expected to have a solid season – once the year begins.

2022 – Deshawn Willoughby, DL, Deerfield Beach. Making his way from Cardinal Gibbons in the off season, here is a quality football talent that still has plenty to learn – and will get a chance to compete against some impressive talented that the Bucks have on the roster.

GODBY HAS AN OUSTANDING SHOWING

Coming over 400 miles to take part were four linemen from Tallahassee Godby High, and these Cougars did not disappoint.

Expected to be one of the best programs in Florida this year, these young men put on a show.

A TICKET TO THE “SHOW”

In addition to the competition, three tickets were awarded as invites to NextGen All-American Camp “The Show” at IMG Academy in Bradenton in late December.

Those three juniors included offensive linemen Jackson Crozier (Cardinal Gibbons) and Elijah Miller (Miami Central), and defensive end Kymani Williams from Miramar Everglades.
