Two weeks ago, Miami Christopher Columbus upset then No. 1 Las Vegas Bishop Gorman in a nationally televised ESPN 2 game as part of the elite Broward County National High School Football Showcase.
Last week, head coach Dave Dunn and his Explorers took the new national No. 1 team, Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas, down to the wire before losing, 31-24.
While it may not have the national following that the past two weeks have, this evening’s (7:00) contest against unbeaten Miami Palmetto may be the most important contest this program has played so far this season.
Losing twice to head coach Mike Manasco and the Panthers last season, this district game that has been moved to Southridge High, is something that could go a long way in determining which south Florida 6A power has the inside track in the newly formed “Open Division”.
While the 2-1 Explorers have received an amazing amount of publicity with its retooled team, which includes several elite prospects, the Panthers have remained in the background and have done no talking or providing any bulletin board material.
This is easily the Game of the Week – with both teams circling this date back when the game was announced.
Win or lose, this should be the first of two meetings!
